would you consider it a drinking problem if someone drinks only once a month but that one time gets wasted?

Just a general question. I know many people who do this and don't think its a problem.

Well it does fall under the alcoholism category, simply because it is a regular pattern. Every form of regular drinking patterns falls under the alcoholsim category, no matter how small it appears. For example, people who drink wine with their suppers every night are a type of alcoholics, even if they don't drink themselves into stupefaction.

In your case, since it is only once a month, I wouldn't consider it a "problem" per se, even if that one time is reserved for heavy duty drinking. Some may disagree and suggest to seek help, but it all depends on how the person is when drinking, and after drinking. For example, you may notice that a day or two prior to the drinking night, the person may be more agitated, less patient, more anxious, etc... These are common signs of alcoholism, although they usually also remain true for drug addictions as well.

In my opinion, I wouldn't consider this a problem... yet. But if the person abuses the people around and makes a wreck of himself for other people to pick up, then that is a problem.

Cheers

depends on how old they are, that would be normal in highschool or college, actually that would be a little less than normal for many. It is only a problem if it gets the person in trouble, either while doing stupid things while drunk, or missing work or school or stuff because of it. If it is a simple go out with friends and drink way too much and come home and sleep in late on sunday, then if it doesnt start becoming more often then its not a problem, although it has the potential to become one. I wouldnt worry about it if all else is well.

If everytime a person drinks they get wasted, then yes, they have a drinking problem. Let me also tell you....people who DON'T have a drinking problem never-ever ask a question like this.

If a person can't stop once they start---even if it's only once a month or once a year---has a problem with alcohol.

if that one time all kinds of problems occur then it is a drinking problem.

Alcoholics do not necessarily drink every day, yet every day they drink causes shite in their life and the people around them.

Warning signs are a person who can't control how much they drink or can't control how long they drink or they can't control their behaviour when they drink.

Think about this situation, a man gets drunk once in a year and during that time he cheats on his wife, gets fired from his job and spends his life savings and gets arrested for beating a random person on the street.
Does this man have a drinking problem? After all, it is only once in a while.

That's binge drinking, which studies have shown can be an early indication of a future drinking problem.

At first I thought no,but how long has this ritual been going on.Where it might not be that frequent now it could. That's how addiction can form from.Outside of that someone who gets trashed every time they drink is not cool and usually get on your nerves Big Time.

its only a problem if it interferes with their daily lives...if they cant work or take care of their family then its an issue...alcoholism and a drinking problem are two different things...one is, by definition, a problem. and the other is a disease that requires treatment.
