My sister and now brother-in-law were apart for 6 years while she was in school and that too she was studying abroad! They are married and have a beautiful baby boy and are still together!
It involves being very honest with the person, its also very important to know that the both of you are committed to each other...Communication is the absolute key to this...emailing, talking on the phone...telling each other about all feelings, emotions, thoughts that are important...taking trips to see each other whenever possible. My sister and brother-in-law saw each other maybe 3-4 times a year for a couple of weeks at a time.
Either way, you have to be aware where the both of you are in the relationship, if you are both committed then sure it will be a breeze...if not, then it wont last.

I've had experience in this matter.
Long distance relationships can work if you can trust your partner.
I went out with a girl in Huddersfield, which is 210 miles away from me, and our relationship lasted 3 years.
Our relationship ended because she got offered a one in a life time job opportunity in Australia.
If your willing to work hard at the commitment, trust and not seeing your partner for weeks at a time then yes they can.

Yes they can work as long as you try hard enough to keep in contact with the person. You have to make that you call the person every day or at least talk to them on the net. If want it to work then it will work as long as both parties want it to work.

To me, it depends on the person and their influence of friends. If she or he found bad frens, then its not gonna work out. I have just experience this feeling of being dump by my GF while she was in Australia. Her group of frens are a big part of her decision. I loved her so much but I cannot do much. All I can do is move on.

They can, it just depends on how much both people are willing to invest in the situation. I think if you love someone enough you can brave all odds to be with that person.
