It's just good grammar. You shoud always capitalize people's names, or words derived from people's names.

First of all, in the English language all proper nouns begin with a capital letter, including all religions, proper names of people, and even names of deities. An example outside of Christianity is the Hindu goddess Kali. Notice that both religions begin with a capital letter, as does the name of the goddess. The word goddess does not begin with a capital letter in this case as goddess is not Kali's name-- Kali is her name. The name God, in Christianity, begins with a capital letter because that is the name by which most Christians know God-- simply as God. By the same token, the name Goddess is used by pagans, witches, and new age believers for their feminine divinity. God or Godess can also be used as a title, such as saying the God Jehovah or the Goddess Athena, as with saying Mister (Mr.) or Doctor (Dr.). It has nothing really to do with religion, but comes from proper English. It does not matter if they are real or not, in this case. Let's say, for a moment, that all gods and goddesses are fictional, that all religions are made up. Pick up pretty much any fiction book and the names of the characters will begin with capital letters, as will the title of the book. Get the point?

For one thing are you so uneducated that you dont spell people's names with a capital letter at the beginning? Jesus, God, Bible, Bethlehem, Christ, United States. These are names of people and places, and we were all taught in the first grade to capitalize those types of words. Not just in church. You can say "just words, not the real thing". That is your opinion, but know exactly what your opinion is about before you impose it on the rest of us. Thanks.

Jesus is a name, and should be capitalized. God is also a 'name' and should be capitalized (there is a difference between a god, and God). Christians is how we identify ourselves, and should also be capitalized, just as you should capitalize Jew, Muslim, etc or even the Elks Club, or the Masons.
It has nothing to do with feeling 'special' - there are rules to what should be capitalized and what doesn't need to be.

Proper english insists you capitalize nouns.
These are all nouns.
A noun is the name of a person, place, or thing.

In the English language, you capitalize proper names, whether you respect them or not.
I capitalize Catholic Church, but have no respect for it.
