There are two methods of numbering in the US the teeth are numbered 1-32 starting with the wisdom tooth at the upper right and continuing across the upper teeth to the wisdom tooth at the upper left (1-16) 17 starts with the wisdom tooth at the lower left and it finishes with number 32 the wisdom tooth at the lower right.

In Canada and Europe the mouth is divided into 4 - upper right is quadrant 1, upper left quadrant 2, lower left quadrant 3, lower right quadrant 4. Within each quadrant the teeth are numbered 1-8 starting with the central incisor as tooth 1 and ending with the wisdom tooth as tooth 8 i.e. the big front tooth on your upper right side would be tooth 11, whereas the big front tooth on the upper left side would be tooth 21.

Actually, the system that some orthodontists are still clinging to is called "Palmer Notation." It involves making little brackets to indicate which quadrant the tooth is in and then the tooth number, counted from the center, is put inside the bracket.

I will not be able to exactly show this in a Yahoo! answer, but for the upper right, which is quarant 1 in Canda and Europe, the bracket looks like a backwards capital "L." For the upper left, it just looks like a capital "L." For the lowers, it is similar, but the "L" is flipped upside down.

__
6 | would be the lower right 6th tooth, which is the lower right first molar. The bracket sides would be connected to each other, though.
__
| 3 would be the lower left 3rd tooth, which is the lower left canine or cuspid.

I can't figure out how to show the upper brackets, but they are easier to visualize.

The last person has it right. The only thing to add is that most american orthodontists also use the 2nd method. Also the primary (baby) teeth are lettered in the same direction as the first method right to left on top and left to right on bottom from A-T (20 Letters..20 Teeth)
