I have successfully used the Stick Paws strips which you can get at any pet store now. You get a lot of strips in a $10 packet.
Usually cats will scratch to mark the corner of the sofa they come to first upon entering a room. Their paws leave a scent and they are marking the sofa (and that room) as part of their territory.

In one room I have a really tall cat tree beside the sofa and many of my cats use that to mark their entrance.

The strips are not that unsightly and can usually be removed after a while. I also use inexpensive cotton quilts to cover ends of a sofa. The cats won't scratch them and they use them for their naps, etc. They are easy to run through the washing machine to take off cat hair too.

Cats hate the smell of citrus and pepper - you can rub a lemon, lime, orange peel on the sofa or find a spray. You could also put white pepper in the area.

Buy a scratch post and put some catnip spray or smell on it so they get used to using that. Or buy a big mat for the door. My moggie loves the mat and her scratch post.

I've heard of this sticky-back sellotape type stuff that cats hate and therefore will leave well alone. Other than that, spraying it with some strong smell will possibly put her/him off.

I'm interested to see other people's (sensible) suggestions, as I have the same problem!

One thing I have read somewhere is that once they start scratching somewhere, they tend to always come back to those same spots as it is the fraying of the material that then attracts them for some reason.

People are not helping you. These sprays will help deter them but even when they are playing if they jump on the furniture they can unintentionally scratch it. The vet has these little rubber things that can be glued to the tips of the nails, called 'soft paws' in my city. I am sure they have them where you are, just call the vet or a pet store. They will wear down but you can replace them.

You can get a spray called pet repellant spray which you simply spray on the areas you dont want your pets to scratch or chew. I found this very effective when my cat was a kitten to stop him scratching and jumping up on furniture.

Buy a scratching post. You can put some cat nip on it so that they have an idea that it is there and they will stop using the couch.
It worked with mine and I did not declaw him either.

If you look around at pet stores you can find scratching post that have cat nip them. The cat will be attracted to the cat nip and should go for that instead of your couch.
