Because the U.S. is America. Yes, there are other countries on the continent of North America, but we are only refering to the United States when we say America, not the entire continent.

Because we are. We don't say, although we could, "We are North Americans". Most people understand that saying we are American is just a short version of United States of America. We also understand when people refer to themselves as Canadians, that they too belong to this continent, and the same goes for Mexico. You obviously have way too much time on your hands if this concerns you.

Because the USA is the ONLY country in the Americas to have the word "America" in its name.

Have you ever heard anybody, one single person, from any of the other countries in the Americas say, "I am an American."? Nope, they call themselves Canadian, Puerto Rican, Guatemalan, Peruvian or Argentinian, but never 'American'.

Furthermore, when people hear the word 'American' they do not think 'Mexican', 'Ecuadorean', 'Jamaican' or 'Brazilian', do they?

So, it only makes sense that we take the appellation 'American' for its basic simplicity of use and the common understanding that it means people from the USA.

This just seems like some made-up semantical indignation to further justify irrational anti-American(!) feelings.

Because people refer to themselves by the name of thier country, not the name of their continent. If someone is from Brazil, they don't say "I'm South American." If someone is from Chad they don't say "I'm African."

I have heard this complaint many times. What would you like Americans to call themselves besides Americans?

I've visited Brazil eight years ago and it is little bitty sore spot that the U.S. citizens call themselves "Americans" as if there are no other "americas" in the Western Hemisphere. South of the Rio Grande all of the way down to Tierra del Fuego (sp?) is commonly referred to as "Latin America." But as far as they are concerned, they are "Americans" too.

It's not a major concern, only a little one.
