I have a real painful ache in the back of my ankle when I walk uphill - I think it's my achilles tendon. I almost have to stop walking but I don't. When I reach level ground again, eventually it goes, but if I have to stop for any reason, it's really painful and I have to hop from one foot to the other to give the other foot a few seconds worth of rest.

I've only noticed this since I started a new job about a month ago and have to walk uphil to get home - it hasn't bothered me til now but I was wondering;

a) will it go eventually?
b) am I doing myself any damage?
c) any advice on how to stop this?

any advice welcome!

Try walking uphill backwards.

You are stretching your Achilles tendon. Try stretching it before any long walks uphill. The benefit is that the tendon will eventually get used to the exercise and stop hurting.

Hello, I expect that your muscles are straining from the walking, when you walk the angle of your leg changes so it stretches higher up. I had a similar things back in May, I had been walking the dog each evening for exercise for myself. My calf muscle had been very sore and really stiff as though I had pulled it, after a bout 3 weeks ignoring I decided not to walk for a while and rest it. I was actually worried about getting stuck in the middle of nowhere not being able to walk. The next night I went into the garden to cut some roses for my daughter, our little dog cam past me, I lurched towards him to play, and lurched on my stiff leg...I fell to the floor in agony, after hearing/ feeling a snap in my calf. 1 hour later my husband got me into the house. I couldn't put any weight on it, but thought it's be ok in the morning. Well it wasn't, I had taken many painkillers and nothing was calming it. We went through to A&E where they put a plaster on it, for a week. It turned out I had snapped the inside of my calf muscle. I have had physio for 6 weeks, it is now 16 weeks and it is still sore, my leg looks weird as there is a gap where my muscle was!
I spoke to a friend whom is a chiropractor, he said if I'd seen him before i'd done it he could have loosened the muscle.
My advice is, if it is really sore go and see a physio or chiropractor. You may find 1 season would be enough.

Having an injury to your achilles is very painful. Walking uphill can put stress on the achilles. To be should you should first have an x-ray to make sure there's no fractures. The best cure for an aggregated achilles is to stay off of it for awhile, maybe try taking another route to work.
Good luck!

sounds like you must be on your feet at this new job. if you're standing / walking a lot, especially on hard surfaces like tile or concrete your legs and feet will suffer. this will probably go away eventually, but in the meantime, get some more supportive, cushiony shoes.

Your tendons and muscles are getting used to this new activity and it should go on its own.

You do not suggest any prior problems so I would be disinclined to worry

Could be heel spurs i know you say its your ankle that hurts but it may be triggered by that. I would say go to the docs for advice.

It could be tendonitis but you should go see a doctor about it.
