I just saw the ear doctor yesterday. I am going deaf. My hearing is weakest at 8KHz, and 4KHz. My left ear is much weaker than the right.
During Desert Storm 1, I was a radar technician. The transmitter emits a loud whine when it is in operation. Usually it was to my left. The main frequencies of the whine include 8KHz, and 4KHhz.
People have been telling me that I sound stressed on the phone. I have difficulty communicating on the phone,an doften get messages messed up. When I get voicemail, I have to listen to them twice. But in person I do fine. I had not realized that I am always looking them in the face.

There is no fast way to learn ASL (or any language for that matter). It is a constant learning process. The best way to learn sign language is to take a class. Look into the local community college, or church groups for classes. There are books and dictionaries, but you will never get as much out of it as face-to-face experience. You can also look into Deaf organizations in your area and see what events they have going on. Go to those and explain your situation and you will find lots of people willing to help.

The speed that you learn it depends on your determination. I would recomend getting a book and then trying to make friends with a deaf person that knows sign language. I learned a little in high school and it came in convienent when I met Tammi she was just the lady who cut my hair. it was nice that I could tell her it looked super though. She was also good at reading lips. That might be something you could work at. Since alot of people think if you can't understand them then your not worth bothering with....

I am sorry for your loss.
Many communities have a Family Center/Resource Center, or something of that nature that is funded with goverment money. Once you find one you can go there and check out materials free, like a Library.
The one in our community has a whole video set of sign language for the beginner. Good Luck!

Sign language is a possibility, but I don't think you'll ever be fluent enough to express yourself fully and be a part of the Deaf signing community.
I presume you're in the US, but here in Britain, there are organisations that support hard of hearing and deafened people, they can really help you get your confidence back and offer you practical help with lip reading etc. I'm sure there will be equivalents where you are.
Losing your hearing can be really difficult to cope with, so don't try to go it alone! Best of luck, and I'm sure you will learn to cope in the end.

You can learn sign language by taking a class in it
I would also get a hearing aid, and an amplifier for the telephone, or a TTY

theres this women named Karen E. Pfeiffer that makes vidios its in sigh languege and talk but she's half deaf it should be e/z to learn i know a lot of it mysefl!!!!!!!!!!!!its totally e-z-2 learn!!!!!
