Professional : Just Nikon, konica, Canon, Olympus, there are many places with good prices, I have seen irresistible offers in "Wolf Camera", but some people do not like to negotiate.
Try here, Best buy: (this is what you can get for less than $500US, very professional features)

Listen, for $500? You ain't gonna get anything except cameras that are outdated by a few years. But, what about the lenses?

Try to see what you can find at www.keh.com and see what you can find along the lines of a D100, which has recently been superseded by the D80 and D200. But, camera without the lens is the same as lens without the camera... not much good. Good luck!

For a fairly inexpensive camera that you can put to professional use (any camera, really) you must first know what you want to shoot... some cameras are better than others for certain things... sports or glamor or wedding or photojournalism or landscapes or travel photography...

WHAT are you interested in, what kinds of photos? You really have to understand that there are "professional" level cameras that can go from $2,300 to $18,000, depending on what you need to use them for.

I used a $75 dollar camera to take weddings for about 3 years once... no one knew that. I know some kids today (2 brothers and a sister that work together as a team taking professional wedding photos) and they're cameras, lenses and strobes do not amount to $400 in worth, yet they're doing professional work and they're VERY, VERY good at what they do.

Digital SLR for Professional Photography -- under $500????

That is NOT something that is going to happen! Most of the Professional Photography Studios are going to use the Canon Digital SLR series (I've seen them use these cameras -- and I also have a Canon Digital SLR) -- but the Body, the lenses (and you need more than one), the Flash Cards, the Extra Batteries, the Flash Units (Master and Slave Units), the image editing Software, etc etc etc is going to run into the THOUSANDS of Dollars (minimum 2,000) for any professional set up -- and that is a relatively conservative extimate of the cost!

I got my Nikon Coolpix 5400 for $350 a few years ago. It is technically a digital SLR.

It's very easy to use, and I've bought attachments/lenses/accessories --- I LOVE that it can be expanded on and uses the same standard Nikon lenses that most of the "better" cameras do.

Since it's been 3 years, I am now wanting something that makes bigger images... but this camera still "works". It's very easy to use... and, as I said, I love that I've been able to accessorize it as I learn photography.

Quite a few photographers I know told me that it's a great "starter SLR" camera (I've done some modeling, and before I bought this I asked around ALOT).

It's currently $209 on amazon.

$500 will get you the cheapest Nikon SLR body, the D50. You will still need to purchase lenses.

The cheapest Nikkor lens is probably the AF f/1.8D 50mm, which retails for around $120. Even used you will spend at least $50-80. There are non Nikkor lenses that will fit and will cost around $100.

In most places you can buy a kit with a D50 and two lenses for $800.

In my opinion, you can't do professional photography with a digital camera. Mamiya has a new 645, medium format, that would do well and you can get any of the best brands of film cameras, or if you insist on digital, Sony with Zeiss lenses, would be the best slr.

well, yeah, you're not going to get a PROFESSIONAL setup for $500....but if you just want a dslr and a lens, look into an older used model like the canon digital rebel (not rebel xt or xti) or the nikon d100. you can also get a refurbed (like new) olympus e-500 setup on ebay.......
