Have been sedentary for a number of years and spend my day in front of a computer. Need something to help jump start so I can start to exercise again.

Try walking. Walking 10,000 steps a day promotes weight loss, and it is not easy at first! However, it is a lot of fun, and it can fit in with your schedule much easier than a trip to the gym can. And of course, any exercise boosts your metabolism - walking is no exception.

On your first day, walk for 30 minutes, and then increase your time and speed from there. If you want to, purchase a pedometer. They are fairly inexpensive, and they probably have them at any health food store or electronics store. Good luck!

Eat several small meals a few hours apart instead of big meals 5 - 6 hours apart. Food fuels your metabolism. When you go into starvation mode, which you are in half the time, your metabolism automatically slows down. That's why so many people can't lose weight when they only eat 1 meal a day.

It's important not to increase the amount of food you eat, just shorten the periods between meals.

As for exercise, set a goal. Check this out:

To coin a phrase, just do it. Get off your large behind and start doing something. You don't need an excuse to start exercising or a jump start, just go do it.

BTW, joining a gym and making it part of your routine in an excellent way to get things going. I like to go to the gym right after work, that way I don;'t get home and make excuses not to work out.

I am over forty also. The best thing that has help me to lose weight is walking even if its just thirty minutes for 4 days out of a week. It really does help. I hate to exercise, but if I am trying to lose weight walking does it for me. The pounds really just start rolling off. You do however have to watch your food intake. So, strap on you a cd player headset with your favorite music in it and get to walking. I promise you want regret it. I dont know if you feel as if you live in a safe neighborhood, so try walking a track there is usually a lot of other people around at the time or get a walking partner which works best for me when you are walking with someone it takes your mind off of the task that you are doing and before you know it you have walked 1 mile or two easily. Good Luck.!!!

Well BESIDE gym (and i take gym meaning weight excercising)
You could try Swimming, squash, aerobics etc etc!

There's no MIRACLE PILL or TECHNIQUE that you can use to increase your metabolism other than hard work!

(another thing to rememberis to eat well!)

One-a-Day Weightsmart is my favorite. It's a multivitamin that also contains stuff like green tea to naturally help boost your metabolism, its not a crazy diet pill. They really help I love them!

Try green tea fat burners. Get them at health food or GNC Stores. I, too, am over 40 and use them during the day. Better than caffeine.

Good Luck
