Don't let him get away with this. (Don't slap him and then give him a treat, that's just wrong!).
When he snaps, grab him and roll him onto his back and hold him there until he stops squirming. (He snaps because he thinks he's the alpha and you have to prove him wrong). By rolling him on to his back and holding him there, you're acting like the alpha of the pack would. Each and every time he snaps you'll have to do this to prove your point, but do it unless you want to become less than alpha. You don't have to be mean about it, as a matter of fact being calm but assertive will get you the best results.
Also make a point of playing in his food dish while he's eating so that he won't snap should a child get into it. Hubby's beagles are 3 and 5 years old and I do it to their food all the time. Also handle their feet, spread their toes, open their mouths and flap their ears around so that when they go to the vet and he does it, they don't think anything of it.

My Lhasa had this problem with my wife, he snapped at her for no apparent reason and other times he was the nicest dog in the world with her. We solved it by instituting a long down. When your puppy snaps make it sit and then lie down, give the stay command. Have it stay in the lying position for 15 minutes or more. Eventually it learns to associate the snapping behavior with a long period of no playing. It worked well for us, it took about two weeks of doing long downs but he learned and is that much the better for it. We even did the long downs without the bad behavior to reinforce the dogs position in the family. I'm number one, my wife is number 2 and my dog is number 3. He knows it. Never use violence to train... that means no hitting and no rubbing his nose in it. Also crate train your dog.

Play with him, when he snaps, say NO and walk away. The play stops immediately. Then go back, play again, when he snaps say NO very firmly and leave him alone.

Also, never encourage any ANY kind of rough housing, like tug of war, letting him mouth you sometimes and then getting mad when he bites. WIth a dog it's all or nothing, they are smart but not smart enough to know when biting is okay and when it is not.

What kind of dog is he? Dogs are dirived from wolves and you have to establish your place as in your pack, you are the leader!!! Let him know that. My friends mixed lab was agressive towards her and I told her when you walk him, you go first out the door and only ONE (YOU) person feeds him. Eventually he will learn the ladder of the pack. Be stern with him, NO BITE Jake (or whatever his name is) NO BITE JAKE! They are like kids, but enjoy him, they are the best unconditional friend you'll ever have!

Fill a spray bottle with water. Every time he barks, bites or has bad behavior spray his butt. It doesn't hurt them, but it annoys them enough to not want it to happen again. And, don't use the dogs name when you say NO. My dogs name is Misty...so when she does something bad I can't say MISTY NO! I have to just say NO! Hope that helps!

How old is your puppy? It could be that he is teething or wants to play.

In any case, if he starts to snap, tell him "No!" or "No Bite!"

Good luck1
