Compliment or insult?
Everyone has stuck their foot in their mouth at one time or another. I have noticed that guys speak without thinking it through sometimes. Last night, I had the following said to me:

"You're smart, you're funny, you're beautiful, I'm surprised you're not married. Why aren't you married?"

"Oh, you mean 'what is wrong with you?'

"You know what I mean.."

Should I be complimented or insulted? Remember, this came from a guy.

I interpret this as a compliment actually. Remember...some people...and not just men...don't quite say what they really mean. I think this should be looked at as "You're a prize for any man". As a man that's how I read it.

Now if a woman said it to you...I'd have to look at it and think "Insult or compliment"? Men are usually quite blunt, unlike women who beat around the bush and are catty. Especially with one another. Men (for the most part) don't smile in your face and then f**k you from afar. Those men that do are scorned by other men.

Rest assured...you've been complimented.

I think the intent behind his words was as a compliment. It is unfortunant that as you said earlier he did not think it all the way through and I can see why it could be taken as something other then a compliment. Sometimes when a man is talking to a lady whom he likes a lot he does not think straight and often times will end up with foot in mouth. Just take the compliment as it was intended and give him another chance.

Not an insult at all. He was only stating the fact that he found it odd someone with your qualities was not "taken off the market". The first thing you need to do is learn some quick come backs so that the next time someone says something like this you can feel confident in your response and smile knowing you've just been complimented once again.

I would take it as a compliment because he expressed all your good qualities, but it seems to me he is curious to know more about you, which includes why (aren't you/haven't you or have you ever been married.) Just go with the flow, everyone wants to know the others histories and there's nothing wrong with that.
As far as "what is wrong with you".... nothing. Everyone has faults, problems, skeletons in the closet, etc. and if they try to portray the angelic, perfect person persona.......Run like h*ll.....Their full of BULLS**T

Be complimented. It means he sees you as an incredible catch and can't believe you haven't been snapped up. Rather like finding a giant stack of hundred dollar bills in plain sight on the street and amazingly, though a hundred other people are milling around YOU found it.

Sounds like a compliment to me. Sounds ALOT like flirting as in a not so sly way of asking if you are into having a serious relationship. Some girls are not mairred because they dont want to get married yet and he was probably checking to avoid wasting time or energy.

Just take it as a compliment, and an open invitation for conversation. He may have been using it to find out your situation or views on marriage in general. Any number of answers could have followed, which would have spoke volumes about you: "Oh, I AM married", "I was married...", "Oh, I'm not ready for marriage", "I'm a monk" ... etc. :)

Complimented! What kind of a jerk do you have to be to turn that into an insult? It was clear what he intended. It's the same concept as if I say to my wife, "Honey, I loaded the dishwasher for you," and she looks in there and says, "Well, you did it wrong." No gratitude. Pay attention to the intent, and overlook what you perceive as imperfect execution.

its definitly a compliment, but he's trying to find out if you may have other issues that might be keeping other guys away from you. now lets say you met a guy and he had everything going for him..much like you... wouldn't you think the same thing?

you may be cool as a regular friend, but people are much dirfferent once they are in a relationship
