Allah willed it:
Qur’an 33:50
“O Prophet! We have made lawful to you all the wives to whom you have paid dowers; and those whom your hands possess out of the prisoners of war spoils whom Allah has assigned to you; and daughters of your paternal uncles and aunts, and daughters of your uncles and aunts, who migrated with you; and any believing woman if the Prophet wishes her; this is a privilege for you only, and not for the rest of the Believers; We know what We have appointed for them as to their wives and the captives whom they possess; in order that there should be no difficulty for you and that you should be free from blame.”
To paraphrase Mel Brooks, "It's good to be the prophet!"

It is entirely possible that in Mohommed's era, 9 year old wives were of the norm. Even to this day, some Middle East countries believe that girls as young as 8 are ready for marriage... however, while the girls may be married off, it is widely accepted that they are not ready for the marriage bed until they hit puberty... usually being taken to bed for the first time at around 15-16.
If the girls are married off young, such as 8, 9 or even 12, then it is the mother-in-laws duty to help prepare the girl for marriage... such as training the young wife on how to properly run the household, how to cook meals, wash clothes... in other words, how to be a proper wife for her husband.
In Mohommed's days, it would not be unusual for a wife to die in childbirth in her late teens/early twenties so it is entirely possible that girls were married off young due to this.
Also, the issue of endowment/ bride dowry would come into play. The older the girl is and higher her status, then the more dowry the potential husband will demand. If the bride to be is only 10, then the girls family will not have to pay as much dowry... therefore, they will not run the risk of having to go bankrupt just to marry their daughter off. Obviously, financial issues come into play in regards to child brides.
Women in Mohammeds day, were brought up to have little value other than as a wife and mother...there was basically *nothing* a woman could do without being a wife/mother. For a woman of child bearing age not to be married or at least engaged, it would have caused both her and her family an enormous amount of shame and public degredation.
Not all child brides would have been the stereo-typical victims nor are they always brutalised and molested.
In India today, there are still child marriages being conducted. It isn't unusual for a 13 yearld to marry a 30 year old guy... but again, it would be common practice for the husband to wait until the bride has gone through puberty before taking her to bed. Unfortunately, there are always exceptions to this rule.
In today's Western society, no-one bats an eyelid at a woman getting married for the first time at 33 years of age but in Mohammed's day, she would have been virtually unmarriagable... seen as a spinster and no man would want to marry her as she would be classed as too old. Men in Mohammeds day would have thought that our culture was hideously defective and would wonder what was wrong with the women for them to go against their 'natural' order in the world.
Again, it comes down to different cultures, religions and of course, century.
As for Mohommed, I can't say what he did was good or bad as I haven't met the man nor the wife... and I sure haven't read the Koran.

first of all she was his wife and the marriage was approved of by hid friends and enemies therefore you have no idea what you are talking about.
#2 pot calling the kettle black I see. How many non-muslim men sleep with underaged girls. I think it's gotten to a point where it's a crime. WHY? because the judicial system NOT nature has dictated to people WHO, WHEN, HOW and WHY they are to interact with one another. and molesting qualifies under the rule that one sexual partner has not entered puberty. Sayyida Aisha RA was already in puberty when she married the Pr. Muhammad ASW.
loser! define your words, get your information from sources other than retards and then speak,

Your problem is that you've become so mislead by the most ignorant of anti-Islamic propoganda that you believe Muhammad was the only prophet to marry a young girl, and, even worse, you are completely ignoring the fact that during that time, and even as close as 100 years ago, when a female child began her menses, she was then considered a woman and elligible for marriage. Fourteen hundred, and even one hundred years ago, when a girl developped, she was considered mature enough to become a wife, as opposed to today's youth when a "child" twice her age is more occupied with video games and music television than life. It was the way of the times.
So while you are condemning Muhammad for marrying a female who *scholars* cannot decide was 9, 12 16, or 19, also take into consideration the millions of men (religious and non) who married women of the same age. Take into consideration that the virgin Mary (a.s.) was estimated at 12 when she gave birth to Jesus (saws). If you are Christian, then you believe that God knew much more than you when He created Jesus (saws) in her womb.
If Muhammad was a pedophile, as many islamophobes like to claim him; why, then, was his very first wife, and most loved of them all, older than he? Why, if he was so overcome with sexual desires, out of all of his wives did he have 4 children with only one; who was that very first wife who was older than him?
Sometimes using a bit of common sense is more worth it than following a blind crowd. Use the knowledge God gave you rather than lock it up in a closet claiming to be doing so for Him.
TJGoldstein, I'm glad you are one who uses ur brain, lol. Only one thing to consider in your statement. Muhammad's first wife and most loved, Khadijah (r.a.), was 15 years older than he.

since when does a 9 year old is consider underage, even though she has reaches her menses.
Imagine America or your great great great grandparents, where the marriage of a child under 12 is consider normal.
Whereas Muhammad s.a.w. lives hundreds of years ago.
Just think when does the equality of men and women started in America,
it is only recently, not even more than 100 years ago.
Whereas The Quran has given right to woman since more than 1400 years ago.
Ponder over it will ya, if u really sincere in leraning.
But i think u r really not interested in it, due to your racist and bigot thinking.

Hey, give Mohamed a break. He married the girl when she was six years old. At least he waited until she was the ripe-old-age of nine before consummating the marriage.
This begs the question; are a Muslims 72 virgins in paradise six or nine years old?

Rape, child rape, gang rape, stonings, beheadings, "honor" killings, punishing raped women... it seems like every Islam-dominated nation on earth today perpetuate some really barbaric "traditions".
Today, Muslim immigrants in many nations seem to be bringing these problems to Western nations such as Norway, Sweden, France, Australia, etc. There's something awry at the core of most of that faith's followers.
Sadly, few of those "moderate Muslims" we keep hearing about ever do much to help influence their brethren abroad.
