The doctor checks over the placenta thoroughly after it is expelled. They are able to see if it is complete or if there are pieces missing.

Sometimes, there will be a piece of the placenta left inside after the birth. Then the doctors can perform a D & C to clean out what's left inside.

If there is a piece of the placenta left inside after birth, it can cause periods to be irregular and there could be some pain involved. I'm not sure about the possibility of infection and how that would show itself.

Ask your doctor how he can be sure that everything is out. Ask him (or her, of course) when your periods should start getting back to a normal flow (not the heavy bleeding that can follow delivery). Ask him what to look for if there might be something left inside.

Good luck.

The dr will inspect the placenta after birth to make sure it is intact. If its not intact they will either do a D&C or try to dig out the rest by hand. If it remains in there you can get an infection that can lead to sterility or death.

First you'll notice an odor, then you'll be cramping (your body's natural reaction to get rid of a foreign object), You'll have to go see the doctor and have it removed. My mother-in-law had her whole placenta left in after her third child and now she can't have anymore.

Any large amounts of placental tissue will cause an infection. You will suffer extreme pain, high fever and possibly death

If there is still any kind of tissue left inside you will still bleed, and it won't be your period.

You wouldn't know .... until awhile later, at which time you'd have an infection, pain, etc.
