Following the control panel route seems ineffective as the printer just keeps turning out paper. If I simply turn it off, it starts printing again when re started.

When clicking on the icon to print, after you press the o.k button look at the start toolbar on its left. You will see a sign printer. Click on it and then on the document printing you want to cancel. It will be cancelled immediately in about 3 seconds.

1. Turn Off the Printer
2. Cancel the Print from Control Panel>Printers
3. Remove Power Supply from the printer and restart.

I simply take out any remaining paper in the printer so as not to waste any more ink/paper and my Epson pops up a window to tell me paper has run out and which has a cancel option - this deletes the rest of the print run.

If you don't get that window then it's possible to click the printer icon in the taskbar which open the printer folder and cancel the print run there.

It's no good doing it either way you've tried because the data has already been sent to- and accepted by- the printer.
Try going into printer control, and pause the printing. Let it carry on until it actually DOES pause, then cancel the rest of it. (and hope - it's a cow of a job sometimes, especially if your printer has a large memory!)

Try this:
Turn off printer THEN use the control panel thing.
Turn off the computer.
Or disconnect the printer and the computer.

You can also try to break the printer.

Best way - Go to print queue, cancel print job.
Quickest - switch off printer to stops print immediately. Then go to print queue and delete print jobs, wait 5 minutes before turning your printer back on...the cache (printer memory) would have cleared itself.
