It is normal and many people have the same effect, however if there is any rash or throat problems, then I suggest not eating anymore. If you are allergic, then you will have other symptoms and if they should occur, take an antihistamine at once (Chlor-trimeton 4 mg) and take three or even four and drink lots of fluid and go to the ER at once. Laryngeal edema causes both swelling of the tongue and strangulation. I suggest eating small amounts until you are sure and if small amounts cause no problem, then increase the amount.

It is possible, the only real way to know would be to see a Dr. about the issue as there are a series of tests to see if and what you are allergic to. It is also possible that you just have a sensitivity to the acids in pineapple as well. Either way it does not seem to be a serious issue though if it is an allergy it could get worse in the future.

It should be obvious to anyone reading your question that you limit yourself to eating the inside of the pineapple. Anyone can tell you that you should always eat some of the pineapple bark after eating the yellow part.

Did you never ask anyone this question before, or ask a teacher or clergyman or parking-lot attendant?

That's why many people will not eat pineapple out of a can, cause it does not contain any pineapple bark; and therefore it will affect your tongue. Why they cannot include a little bark in every can is beyond my comprehension.

This has happened to me too, so we are not alone by all the answers below. I put salt or chile on pineapple (that brings out the sugar, as I learned at the pineapple stands in hawaii) and doesn't seem to make my mouth feel weird. Also, adding salt doesn't sound like a sweetinging agent, but somehow it is on melons as well and I know that melons are not acidic. Try it, not a lot, just a little salt.
LOL

Hey, I get the same reaction whenever I eat pineapple. Usually when I eat more than just a little bit. I don't know if it is everyone, but it is because of the acid content of the pineapple that makes your tongue tingle like that.

We may me more sensitive to the pineapple acids than others. :)

This doesn't make me stop eating pineapple though!

Blondie,

I wouldn't panic! This is actually a somewhat common reaction to pineapple. I believe it is caused because of the very high acid content in the pineapple, combined with the sugars that react with your saliva.

I love pineapple and sometimes have a very similar reaction!

No your not allergic to pineapple, I get exactly the same thing, Its a really weird sensation on the tongue, don't worry about it, its the pineapple juice that's all.

You get used to it after a while.

you could be, you will only know if you go see your GP to refer you to a specialist for tests, If i were you I would avoid pinapple until you have found out, as if your tongue swells up you could choke, often allergies work that way. if in doubt avoid until you know, its a shame as pinapple has some great characteristics, for example if you eat or drink pinapple juice on a regular basis, your persperation and other body fluids would have a pineapple flavour and aroma. Which can be very great one as it helps to smell good and secondly it can be erotic...

It could be that the pineapple wasn't cut/prepared properly.

If you peel a pineapple, you'll see little dimples with little black spikes in them. These need to be trimmed and cut out of the pineapple or they'll sting our tongue and result in what you're experiencing.

Me too! I thought I was the only one, and I love pineapples! It's more like a tingling sensation though. It lasts for a while, about 20 minutes like you said. IT's annoying, lol...No allergies though, I know that... I asked my dad, I forgot what he told me though...
