The only reason my son is in prison is because, as they were getting off of the school bus when he was 17 years old, he had to protect his girlfriend and himself from a maniac running at them with a knife, and the guy had every intention of hurting or killing both of them, so, my son beat the **** out of the guy, but my son was the one who got arrested....for self defense!! Go figure!! So, if someday, you are faced with a similar situation, what would you do? Let the guy kill you???

People tend to be very judgemental about anyone convicted of any crime simply because it saves them from having to deal with the fact that it takes only a single moment of anger, stupidity, greed, desperation or just plain bad luck to become a felon... But consider this- 1 in every 136 US citizens is in a prison (State or Federal) or a county jail- If no one you love is locked up, then someone you know DOES have a friend or family member behind bars.
It can happen to anyone, and until the "System" in all it's inscrutable glory becomes a part of your life, you can't understand the incredible impact it has not just on the convicted party but on that person's friends, family and other assorted loved ones.
Most people are lucky enough to be blissfully ignorant of the realities of having an inmate in their life...They don't know that it means walking VERY HARD ROAD....it's about slogging through endless paperwork, it's trying to keep up with rules that seem to change every week, it's waiting for incredibly expensive collect phone calls that might or might not come and when he doesn't call, praying with all your heart that the phones in the day room are just either too busy or broken and that he's not hurt or on lockdown, it's becoming obsessive about checking your mail and the heartsick feeling that comes over you when the letter you want so badly isn't there,it's about getting writers cramp and spending $20 a week on stamps and stationary, it's about dealing with either keeping it secret or dealing with disapproval and contempt everywhere you turn and mostly it means living in a future you can't be sure of and that really does take a toll.

I know there are some people that are in prison for things they shouldn't be. I feel bad that the court systems had put your son there. I'm also sorry that someone had upset you and made you feel so angry.Sometimes people don't understand or want to understand. The criminal system doesn't help neither. They think everyone is always guilty. So don't look down on yourself or your son. I hope everything turns out ok. Good Luck!

If this is the whole truth, he should not be in prison. Self defense laws say that you can use necessary force to protect yourself and anyone else. However, if your son had been antagonizing or bullying the "maniac" in the days prior to the incident, he may have instigated the attack. Gotta be a lot more to this story.

Three years for a probation violation is a pretty long time. So..was his assault charge the violation or was he on probation and violated by committing some other crime.
I'm rather suspect of the circumstances you relate as to the "defending" himself. If he was able to overcome the alleged knife attack, then true..he should not have been in jail. However if you make it a point to beat someone to a bloody pulp once you have them under control...well...then jail it is.
So...what really happened? Maybe a Google search for all Florida papers under his name will bear some fruit.

Oh, I never really read the bible, Mr captain, so I wouldn't know. I would ask my husband because he has a bible, but most of the pages have been ripped out. One time he got stuck in the bathroom for half the day after I fed him a laxative filled custard. I was mad at him that day, so I took all of the toilet paper out of the bathroom. The only thing in there was a bible and a gardening magazine. Sadly, I haven't ready my garden magazine in awhile either. Blesses!! -F U

well the smart thing to do and this is how you stay out of trouble when you get in a fight is to make sure that someone hits you first, that way you have free will to hit him harder and you can claim that self defense, but the law can be so cruel sometimes avoiding certain circumstances that can cause situations to go down

Is there more to this story? I don't know where you live, but I am trying to understand how he got jail time for self defense. How many witnesses were there? You should prolly get a lawyer. This all sounds weird.

i read a lot of the answers to your first request for letters to him
Disregard these answers as these people have no effect on your life experience or your sons so don't get upset, the emotion isn't worth it!
The love u have for your son is immeasurable and lots of people don't understand that.
Keep loving him and be the best mom u can be.

i would do the exact same thing. if this guy is going to kill you, you have to defend yourself, it's an automatic reaction. your son shouldn't be in jail for self defense, the guy that attacked them should be for attempted murder.

Was it California or Illinois ... or New York ... trying to think of the states that would be stupid enough to do something like that. I wish you well. It is a miscarriage of justice all the way around. I wish you peace.
