You need to pick a different supermarket. My food store puts the bakery first so you can get sqashed bread and pies and the meat section comes second, so the meat has plenty of time to go bad before reaching the refrigerator. Then comes the vegetables, just in time for the fourth section, cans of soup which, can lie on top of the tomatoes.

First produce, most people don't think of produce as a staple in their diets. If supermarkets put produce in a back corner, no one, or I should say very few people would ever visit the produce dept. and then they would make no money off of the produce. By putting it up front so you have to walk thru it, they increase sells of produce sometimes as much as 10 fold.
I don't know what store you shop at, but I have always found eggs in the dairy section, never in baked goods. Eggs need to be kept cold, and are right next to the milk at Wal-Mart

The reason that supermarkets place fruit and veg at the front of the store is that research shows that the first thing a customer sees in a shop affects their overall impression of the shop. Therefore, if fruit and veg is the first thing people see, the impression that the shop provides fresh and healthy food.
It is believed that some food stores actually pump the smell of sweet smelling foods (such as donuts) into the air of the shop to make people feel hungry and therefore buy more food.

It's all to do with supermarket designers and making as much money as they can out of you. Most people are right handed so the shop is designed that way. The main staple foods are in the corners of the store. Also the things that are bad for you will be at adult eye level. Anything that the kids will like will be at kiddie level enabling them to pull at your heart strings and buy them stuff. The best way to save money and avoid squashed stuff is to either shop backwards or shop on line but avoid ASDA on line shopping as I have attempted 3 shops and have never been successful

Apparently it's because fresh veg looks enticing. (I asked my local supermarket manager) But I agree, not only do the veg get squashed, but when you get to the meat counter and they haven't got what you wanted, you have to go back to the veg to get the appropriate veg. By the way, this is not a UK problem. I live in Switzerland and often shop in Germany - same story!

I use the little section at the front of the trolley for fruit and veg, stops it getting squashed.

the super market is set up in a way to get people to buy things that they don't need before they get the things that they do need. As with the veggies. Just get those last ot put them where a child would go on your shopping cart.

Same in mine, and then bread! With drinks pretty much last, so you gotta rearrange your basket so that you don't squash your bread and/or veg with bottles of Coke and Vodka.
