You are going to have to really work with your dog. It doesn't sound like he has been well socialized with other dogs, and puppies can be very annoying to adult dogs, always jumping and getting in their faces. Have monitored play sessions with them. Make sure the puppy isn't overly hyper w/ your dog, if it is, take it away until it calms down, then bring it back and try again. Give your dog rewards and praise when he tolerates the puppy and especially when he shows interest in playing. Try a game of tug w/a rope or fetch with a ball/stick, something they can both focus on other than each other. Just make sure your dog doesn't start getting annoyed with the puppy. If you see that happening, play session is over. You'll simply have to try getting them together as often as possible. It's hard to start socializing a dog and get it really used to new things once it's set in its ways. Oh, also try taking them outside to a park or something together, as long as they are close to each other physically, you should start to see improvements with his attitude.

it sounds like the 6yr old is used to running things around the house. Try this, have your sister give you a call before she brings the pup over. Give your dog a vigrous walk (remember, you walk the dog not the other way around) and play with him. The distrust of strangers and other animals has been taught to him over a long time and it will take awhile to break him from that. You may also want to keep the 6yr old on a leash while the pup is around so you can give quick and proper correction to him. You can also try distracting him with treats while the pup is around, making him wait while you give the pup a treat then give him one. This will put the pup higher up than the 6yr old because the pup gets the treat first.

It is pretty difficult to "teach an old dog new tricks". If your dog is older and especially not sociable then it will make it even more difficult. It may take time for yours to warm up and it may never happen, and if it doesn't happen make sure your sister socializes her pup well. Not saying you didn't because even if you did, when they get older, they don't have as much energy as a pup and may feel overwhelmed. My in-laws have a real old black lab, he is great around my brother in-laws dog because they have been around each other since his was a pup. Now she is older and we have a pup but they keep telling us that we can't bring him around because the older dogs "won't like it". If thats how they feel I won't take him over there but we made sure we socialized him well, we take him to dog parks and have play dates (a little extreme to some but in the city it's necessary)>

Dogs have personalities just like people. Your dog may not ever get along with the puppy.

Get them together and watch them, stay with them. When your dog acts up, swat his nose and put your finger on his snout and push down, tell him NO firmly. Say it more than once.
Stay with them for awhile, keep doing that to him and this WILL work. Spend some quality time with the two dogs together.
