He's probably NOT in kindergarten, my son's three and beginning preschool. I do not think that English language aquisition at three will be difficult for him. What is probably causing him some difficulty is his new environment, and it's normal in all children beginning school.

Here are some suggestions:
*There is research stating that bilingual children excel in school (as compared to monolingual children) his parents do not need to be speaking English at home, the child will pick up English at school. It's better if he's learning two languages, it may slow him down at first, but in the end, bilingualism is infinetly better.

*Have the teachers at his pre-school do a unit on his home country. Have the parents ask if they can come in and share a bit of their culture and food with the other children. It will help him feel safer at school and more secure that they appreciate his culture.

*At home, build up school! Make it a continuation from school by asking what he learned and following through at home. This way, the knowledge he aquires in English can be broadened and enriched at home in his native language.

*Give him time and be patient. All children learning a new language go through a "silent period" when they feel insecure. Eventually though, they all come out of it and are better for it. Be patient and give him time to learn.

The school will take care of his english education. Most schools have programs for students who's 2nd language is english. He will pick up the pronunciation mostly by exposure. He is going to have a great gift, being able to speak 2 languages. Kids learn very quickly, and at that young age, most kids will be curious more than mean.

If his speech is that hard for him to articulate your nephews parents can enroll him into a child development service (free special needs programs for speech, hearing, socialization skills and kindergarten prep) and they can work with him there on speech articulation..they ply games make it fun and the child will not know he is there because of his problem to speak he will feel he is there to BE AT SCHOOL like a big boy..look up your local child development services in the yellow pages or call his local school district for the number

In chicago 3 year olds go to Kindergarden? Wow way early maybe he should wait till he is at least 5...and tell the fam that it would be easier for the kid to learn English if they spoke it to him.

I am assuming that when you say kindergarten you actually mean preschool - no school (private or public) would allow a 3 year old to start kindergarten. However, this is a great website that will help him learn phonics & word families. www.starfall.com

Try this site. It has a nice soundboard that will help the little guy learn sentences that he will be using on a everyday situation.
