Have just started going with this guy I've known for years, he's just come out of a 4 year relationship, so we both agreed it would just be a bit of fun. We get on really well, and have only just slept together after meeting and chatting for the last 2 months. Only I'm a little confused as he wants to take me out for dinner on my birthday and has bought me a present? He says how he's only interested in me and tells me when he's missing me. We speak every day and he always wants to see me, but then in some texts he carefully reminds me we're just having fun. I'm okay with that but still a little confused as to where he is going with it all?

It sounds like he's falling for you - be careful because he is clearly on the rebound. The best thing to do if you're looking for a booty call is to straight out tell it like it is - from the start. Set up an arrangement where you get together a couple times a week, just for sex. Keep the emotions out of it. I did the very same thing when I was 21, I met and dated a 36 yr. old man for 6 months. Our relationship ended because of our age difference - basically, he thought I was too young for him and didn't want to get involved any more then he already was. Well, a few months went by and we weren't seeing anyone, so we agreed to get together just for sex. We no longer went out on dates, or celebrated holidays. I would go to his home - we'd drink wine and talk about everything that's going on with us, and then have sex and give each other back massages afterwards. It was great fun and this went on until I met a new guy and started seriously dating him.
Lay all your cards on the table - otherwise, he's going to want to do more and more with you.

He's just as confused as you are ... He's just getting used to not having a relationship when this happens and now he doesn't know if he's doing the right thing by saying it's just fun or if he should be more serious.
Let him take you to dinner and buy a present then jump into bed with him and make whoopee ... just enjoy the attention!

Why don't do decide whether you want him as a bed buddy or a bf and then have 'the' chat with him. If things go wrong and you want different things...make sure you leave it on mutual grounds and no one bed business. It will only make things hard for you and someone will get hurt.

He probaly feels more towards you but is worried you don't feel the same way if you don't back off abit only see him on weekends for a night of passion and speak to him twice a week if that, if you do like him tell him so.

Sounds to me like he misses what he had -- the perks of being in a relationship, the need to fulfill and be fulfilled. So I would advise him that unless he wants more of a relationship with you beyond being bed buddies, then gifts are off limits... i.e. paying for sex.

Just take things slowly and see how it goes. With no pressure involved, this could bloom into a proper relationship.
Be carefull that the 'no strings' clause isn't just a way for him to string you along while he beds other women on the side.

Do not take this very seriously and be just normal friend and do share fun till you are together and be prepare your mind that one day you both have to part .

If he cares for u enough to want to do things for u and be with you, what is the problem?

Well let him do you a few times and see how it develops. Women normally dont do the 'fun' bit and want more but try it if you are any good he might stay.
