Absolutely, in fact "Coulrophobia" is the term given to people who have a phobia of clowns. There are MANY people with this phobia. In discussions of causes of coulrophobia seem to agree that the most fear-inducing aspect of clowns is the heavy makeup which, accompanied by the bulbous nose and weird color of hair, that completely conceal the wearer’s identity. Oh my god, yes! I hate them! They are really freaky if you think of it though, fully grown men dressed up in daft clothes and make up, pulling evil smiles and spending all their time with kids! I know my children won't be having any clowns for their birthday parties!! Maybe you saw one when you were really young and it startled you then and you've just been scared since? My personal thing is that I saw IT when I was young and since then, clowns are a definite no-no! I actually have 2 children aged 6 and 3 and have noticed that hardly any childrens parties these days include clowns, maybe because they scare kids, or maybe because now all people like that have to be police checked and maybe that's an issue. I'm not saying their all criminals, cuz obviously a lot of clowns simply love kids, but anything can come up on these police checks.
Anyway, don't worry, you're not alone - maybe we should start a support group!!! XXX

Well if you've had this fear since childhood, it could be a multitude of things. More than likely you either had a birthday party or went to one that had a clown, which was probably at a fairly young age. Because young children are impressionable and easily scared (ie. running from the vacuum cleaner), then you could have developed a fear of clowns then.

Actually a friend of my sister had a similar fear. Thier are several theories on this fear, something about the disquise you don't know who they really are. Some people have it for other reasons like seeing a clown drinking or something. Though it is a rational fear, sometimes I'm afraid of everything.

Clowns are hideous. Perhaps fear of clowns is in our collective unconscience as are snakes.
Dolls have also become a bit hideous to me.Thats from an acquaintance whom I believed, telling me that a doll on her shelf, in an evil voice, called her name. They're close to those 'dummies' which are also hideous.
Recently I stayed at a cousins home I hadnt seen since childhood. She loves dolls and has a room filled with them.On shelves, in cases,on the soffit,on the dresser, in her large curio cabinet."I got her from blah blah, Oh and she came from blah blah" lovingly humanizing these things. That room is also her guest room. I couldnt tell her that the entire room creeped me out (the dolls have ears)and I had to take an Ambien to fall asleep.
Had it been a room of clown dolls I'da told her the truth and hopped in her bed!

When I was a kid there were short films made by a trio of alleged funny men called The Three Stooges and I used to cringe. They didn't wear red noses etc. but all their routines were pure circus clown stuff and they'd have me fleeing in terror. I don't know why. Now that kind of thing just seems deeply boring and not funny at all.

I dont understand the fear but it seems real to me.
Had a coworker who feared clowns and as a joke i put a pix of a clown on his wiper blade and i was suprised he would NOT go near his vehicle. I know that was mean now but then i didnt realize how real his fear was.
Yes i took the pix off for him.

I do not like them either. The colour of their
make-up is "creepy" and frightens me. May be
I had a bad experience in my childhood too.

In some Hollywood-movies they are very bad
and
angry and frightening — But why a clown's mask.
Why is this mask or make-up so terrifying. Not for
every one .... kids normally like clowns,
but I do not like the typical clown.

I am the same. Got taken to the circus when I was little and had to pretend to be having a good time when I was actually terrified.
I have since seen the film "IT" by Stephen King which probably hasn't helped. Kill 'em all, I say.
