As a Muslim I am keen to perform all the fasts in the month of Ramadan. The only problem is that I am a smoker and would find it very difficult to go without cigarettes for a whole day (shameful I know!) Can you please advise me on the use of nicotine replacement therapies during Ramadan, including nicotine patches and nicotine inhalers where nicotine is absorbed in to the blood stream through the tongue. Thanks.

Thank you for your question. It is a blessing to you that you are very concerned with doing what is right during this holy month of Ramadhan. Excellence in matters of 'ibadah is always to be sought after and even your intention to do it right has already been a blessing on you.

Here is my answer. According to the passage in the Quran that prescribes the fast in Ramadhan, it is prescribed for us in order to help us learn self restraint. In view of that I think that the best thing for you to do is to try and not smoke all on your own. Praying for the strength and fortitude to do that.

If that is not possible, and you really feel you have given it your honest best try then get a doctor to prescribe a nicotine patch for you, it is ok. But it is not ok to take any inhalers between Fajr and Maghrib.

Obviously the best thing is for you to quit smoking entirely as it is actually Haram based on the fact that it is a poison for your body. So why not take the time during Ramadhan to also pray for Allah's (swt) guidance in quitting smoking and continue not to smoke even after Ramadhan is over. Why not put that intention in your heart right now?

Bless you for your intention to be as elegant as possible in your observance of Ramadhan, may Allah (swt) bring you success!

And Allah knows best.

Peace and Blessings,

Salim

nicotine is an addictive and dangerous drug. You should definitely give up smoking anyway but, to be honest, the best way is to just stop dead. Finish you last *** late at night, then go to bed.
Yes, I know, the firrst 2 weeks will be hell - but the next 50 years might be a lot better.

So, I'm not getting involved with ritual matters, just common sense. anyway, remember, the government gets most of the money for each pack of cigarettes. I have to assume that like most of your sect, you don't like the British government - so, don't give them your money. (much nicer argument than just saying "give it up").

The best thing for your health, is to give up.
I was stupid enough to start after some very stressfull events in my life. Read up on what it does to your veins,skin;sex-life,lungs, limbs, body, mind.
Don't do it.
Be proud to be healthy.
It's only a day at a time.
And then reward yourself.

Good luck

It's allowed if other required medicines are allowed. But if you have to take medicine then you don't have to fast at all. If you are fasting, that implies you can wait until after dinner for your medicine.

nicatine patches is allowed, as for inhalers is a no no as it entered the oral cavity.
Thats why any injection is also allowed as it will not pass through the oral, nasal, anal or ear cavity.

based on As-Shafiee
