I'm in the Royal Navy, and spend a considerable amount of time at HMS RALEIGH in Torpoint. I don't drive down there (from London) as Her Majesty pays my train fare. When we get time off, I'd like to get down to Looe and Polperro (and anywhere else nearby readers can recommend) as I just love Cornwall (I'm from New Zealand). The problem is the buses, and transport generally. There appears to be about one bus a day going to L and P. And one coming back. Any suggestions on how to get around while there? Taxis cost a fortune. Is transport really that bad in beloved Kernow?

Please don't write 'no' or anything else to get your two points. It's moronic and infantile.

Public transport in Cornwall is not the best in the world. I stayed at Port Isaac for a week walking some of the coastal path and had to cab it everywhere cost an absolute fortune. There is a web site that gives you timetables. Try www.nationalrail.co.uk and then you can find a link to bus timetables. Also you can find a phone number and you actually speak to someone and they are really helpful. The trouble is always that services finish so early or are very infrequent. Thats country life for you. I have walked the whole of the South West Coastal Path (630 miles) from Minehead in Somerset right around to Poole in Dorset. Walking is another option. Sometimes works out quicker!

There is a coastal bus in the summer that travels from Torpoint or Saltash and Plymouth to Looe and Polperro.

You can get a train to Looe, buses are few and far newteen and take forever. The Looe Valley line is a pleasure in its own right.

The trains are the best way of getting around Cornwall.

My parents have just spent a week near St Ives, and they either walked or caught trains.

The buses in rural areas are really bad.

Try hiring a car, or take a bicycle and tent, or get an 'orse *:-)
