feel along the collar bone...you'll feel an indentation where the collar bones meet. feel right above the notch, there will be a soft-fleshy spot covering a hard/spongy feeling spot. this is the trachea. from here make a one inch incision making sure not to puncture the white membrane underneath. then use hemostats TO puncture the membrane, spread the hemoastats and insert a tube into the airway......release the hemostats then tape the tube down. about one inch of tube should extend out of the throat.

First off, it's very difficult to perform this procedure without proper training and equipment. In paramedic school, we learned this on mannequins and practiced for several hours.
There are a few very effective ways to get an object removed from a person's throat (Heimlich maneuver) without causing the damage that a cricothyroidotomy will cause. If you do perform this procedure without the proper training (an on duty paramedic in a state that allows the procedure, or a doctor) then you can and probably will be sued for medical malpractice. The "Good Samaritan" Law which protects first responders from getting sued for helping, would not apply in this situation, because performing a procedure such as this without proper credentials would be considered gross negligence.
There's a space in the throat between the thyroid cartilage and the cricoid cartilage that one can make a small incision in and insert an airway into. Without the specialized airway, the incision is useless (and unlike in the movies, a pen or straw does not work!). If you want to be able to help your buddies in case they start to choke on something, take a CPR class at your local fire department or community college.
Hope this helps!

First, there is no such thing as an emergency tracheotomy, in an emergency you do a cricothyroidotomy, (through a membrane at the base of the voice box). The trachea is surrounded by the thyroid in the neck and it can be a very bloody operation if you move too fast. So the tube goes in at the base of the voice box, far up from the clavicles

In the first place don't.
If you have not been trained you are likely to do far more harm than good.
You should be able to clear the throat and if needed insert on of those plastic airways with basic first aid skills.
If you start cutting on people you are likely to be charged and likely sued, rightfully so!

You can feel a gap in between the two points of the bone that the area is only covered with skin, on a male patient it would be just below the Adam's apple you use your fingers to locate the area that u can push your finger into and it gives way.
