You probably should have started racing at a very young age. Then you have to be good enough to get a roster spot on a pro team that qualifies for the Tour (the top 20 ranked pro teams get invited, the others are at-large bids.) Then you have to be good enough within that team to make the 9-man squad, even if all you will be doing is domestique work.

- You must first be on a pro team. That's the easiest part.
- Your pro team must be chosen to participate in the Protour, which has a limited number of teams.
- Tour team must be invited to participate in the Tour de France.
- Your team must be able to financially afford to be in the Tour.

And then there's getting the three weeks off work...Yada, Yada.

After you achieve local, national and even international road racing cycling recognition you might be approached by a Pro team that will race in the Tour. Is that what you're after? Good luck!

If you do not qualify to actually race there are tour packages that you can purchase to be a "fill in rider" and ride part of the race with the actual participants. My sister-in-law purchased this for my brother and he rode for a few days with Lance in his last race. Lance actually signed my brothers jersey. FYI my brother is heavily involved with racing in the north east...Sorry I can't give you more information. You should contact racing groups. Good luck and have fun.

I would take a moment to read this article. Just any joe cannot up and say, "I think I'll compete in the Tour de France this year!"....You must be part of a cycling team.
