For those who lost a lot of weight WITHOUT surgery. How'd you do it and how long did it take?

I've lost 120 pounds over the last year. It wasn't easy but I feel great. The hardest thing was to change my eating habits. I was used to eating whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted it, whether I was hungry or not. You have to change your way of thinking--you need to eat to live, not live to eat. There are still lots of tasty foods that I can eat, I just have to control my portions.

I also exercise quite a bit. In the beginning I was walking about 1 mile a day. I've now increased this to 3 1/2 miles a day (takes about an hour). I do some weight training as well and have some different exercise video's to keep some variety in the types of exercises I am doing.

Good luck to you on your journey. You can do it too!

First remember that most people have a hard time keeping their weight under control (just look at the people are your local mall).
There are those who can beat it easily and others like me who had a make subtle changes in their lifestyle. Yes, subtle changes.

I stopped trying to be perfect! I use to beat myself up everytime I "cheated", then I'd overeat thinking that I had already blown my diet. This would then cause my weight to go up.

Now instead, I have relaxed my attitude & allow myself a bit of everything. I said a bit. If I want to give in to a craving I do, however, I have just a small taste. This usually satisfies.

I found that daily motivation was hard to I started to visit sites that had daily tips, articles & short motivational ideas. These little nuggets of information kept me on track.

I then decided that I wasn't going to lose the weight overnight, so I didn't rush it. I didn't hit the scale daily (it will only depress you),
I know that I would have to have a complete lifestyle change, but Iit wasn't going to be easy or quick. I dropped all the quick fixes and made only 1 change per week. A change that I knew that I could live with.

If you think about it, in 6 weeks you could have 6 healthy changes! In 26 weeks--26 changes which will totally change your body shape and your outlook on dieting. Yes, I no longer diet, but I now have a good foundation of eating habits and fitness routines.

Do it slowly and your results will last forever. Try to lose as much weight as possible as quickly as possible and it will come back.

Don't gauge your results on anyone else's. Each person is different, their nutrition needs and fitness goals will be different.

Look at you diet and fitness levels now. Take a good look. What can you change? Plot out your changes on a calander. If you slip up, don't worry as long as you get back into it asap.

Once you start losing weight slowly, looking better, feeling better it will be easier to move on. Try a fad diet, you'll look like crap (all baggy skin) and feel diet and cranky.

What ever route you take, do it slow, choose changes that YOU can stick to and start it. Everyday you'll feel better.

Don't be obsessed with your weight. The more you obsess about it, the less you will lose. Let it be a natural process.

I had mono once... for a week I slept 22 hours a day, hardly ate a thing and lost a lot of weight, quickly.

Ok, that's not a good story.

Two summers ago, I stop eating sugar, ate only protein stuff at breakfast, stop drinking soda pop, and did a work out tape 5-6 days a week for 45 min each day... and lost 30 pounds in a couple months.

I did the body for life challenge and put on 10 kgs of muscle in 3 months and i almost had a tight six pack so can i suggest that maybe you should read a book they have out, it runs you through the 3 months so you can write down every days occurances, it is great and on every page is a little snap shot of someone who has overcome challenges. You may hear some bad things about the program, i tend to think it is more from the people who did not fully try. Take on the challenge you have everything to gain:0)
