It could be worms, but it's probably more likely to be his anal glands. The glands can become impacted, and cause irritation to the dog, making them lick, drag their bums along the ground, etc.
If he's going to the vet anyway, I wouldn't worry too much- the vet will pick it up very easily and can solve the problem very quickly by expressing the glands. Just remember to breathe through your mouth...the smell's something you'll not forget in a hurry!

I use to think that when a dog rubbed his butt along the floor or licked it a lot that it was worms, but in fact it means that their anal glands are swollen. The fluid inside of the anal glands are very toxic to the dog so you will want to get them emptied ASAP, it’s kind of like if our intestines burst we would become very sick and die. The glands are normally emptied on their own when the dog poops, but if the dog isn’t getting enough fiber and the poop is not hard enough to help empty the glands then they become full. There are ways for you to empty them, my vet showed me however, I suggest that you take your dog to the vet first and have them do it (it is very inexpensive) have them show you both the internal and external way to do it. Also remember to look out while it is being done, it will squirt out and omg the smell is horrible.

I'm not grossed out.....it's very dog like and extremely common. More than likely your dog simply needs his anal glands expressed. Some dogs lick their rectum and some dogs butt surf across the carpet.
You can have your vet show you the correct way express his anal glands so you can save a office visit next time.
If your dog is a fatty or has a docked tail, it is sometimes difficult and easier to get the vet to do it. Even a dog groomer can take care of this butt lickin' condition.
If it were worms, more than likely it would be tapeworms and you would see them clinging to her butt area or dried up in his bedding. They look like small grains of rice.

A dog will naturally lick their "behind" when they have gone poop or ....whatever. But your wife is right, and especially if they are licking themselves obsessively, it is quite possible they have worms. This happened to my dog
about a year ago. The "reason" my dog ended up with worms, is because a cat went poop in our yard, and as
disgusting as this "is", my dog ate some of it! Yep, for whatever reason, dogs are attracted or curious enough to do that. Hey, you asked....But it's kind of hard to answer that without getting graphic. Good luck.

Most likely yr dog has a case of worms, but there is also a gland located there that may cause discomfort, get yr vet to check that as well. You can worm yr dog yrself and should do so every 6 months, get the tablets from yr vet and either put them down the dog's throat or put something yummy on them for it to eat. I give my pooch his tablets coated in vegemite and he takes it straight out of my hand, my dog gets done every 3 months since he is a Golden Retriever aka natural vacuum cleaner and god knows what he picks up.

It could be worms (make sure you bring a stool sample to your vet appointment)....... or .......
He could have impacted anal glands. There are 2 glands on either side of the anus that sometimes get "backed up", and that will also cause the dog to do alot of licking.
Not to worry: either it worms and he gets worming medicine, or it's his glands and the doctor will squeeze them clear for you (very easy). :-)
Best of luck!

It could be worms or impacted anal glands. Either way, it sounds like a trip to the vet is warranted.

Not worms. Three words-Anal gland extraction. It's a cheap fix at the vet's office. Unless, putting on rubber gloves, greasin' up your fingers, stickin' them in your babies hinny and pinchin' the glands on both side of his anus and squeezin'(protective face gear-a must) doesn't seem to bother you.

Yes it is most likely worms.
You need to worm your dog every 3 months to keep him healthy.
If it is worms you should treat yourself, and your family for worms to as they can be caught.
You also should have your dog on a annual Heart worm needle, this is a silent but deadly killer.
