Still quite a 'Scottish' place populated by people whose parents, etc., moved there from Scotland during its time as a steel town.
It had a depressing, badly designed (grey concrete and exposed steel girder) town centre. However, I believe this has been revamped recently.
The surrounding countryside is beautiful, bordering as it does on the rolling hills of south Leicestershire and Rutland. The villages in the vicinty (e.g. Rockingham, Gretton etc., ) are picture postcard places.
The roads around the town periphery mean that you can pass it by without having to enter the town itself.
At one time (maybe this is still true) it had an incredibly inexpensive and prolific taxi service. which meant that it was easier and cheaper to use a taxi to get around the town than to use the bus service!
I do recall the people were friendly during my time in the area, though some times it was difficult to understand what they said. But your ear soon got used to the accent!
PS It is now the home of some sort of giant (car?)race track.

Yes, I used to live there. It is close to Kettering and Market Harborough and used to be a thriving steel industry until they went on strike because the management didnt like people clocking on for each other whilst they were going back to scotland to sign on. Subsequently the steelworks closed, strangely enough.
They used to have one of the best chip shops called The Frying Scotsman.
A normal week had at least one person with an axe in their head.
Nice place.
