This custom has its root when there were no roads, no transportation .......people were on their own, according to Hindu customs people build their houses in a way that as you come out in the morning to go to work you greet the Sun and you are greeted by the sun.

Few people were able to calculate dates on their own they consulted some one all the time as specially people with money, lots of people travel at night and the pundit would recommend brightest moon light night for safe travel and camping at night.

Three or four time a year you have those conditions in a year.

People with ability to calculate will also take second opinion. Pundits were tight lipped and did not give away the true reason they will just say this should be the start date and must end by this date. Lot of people had knowledge about North star but did not know how to navigate south.

I myself always see weather charts to see what to expect during any long distant travel. We have whole TV staff devoted to Travel weather.

vijay is true, but his dialogues sound a bit rude on hinduism..

wat i say is dat dis is not a hindu custom.. it must be a local community's superstition.. coz i'v never heard of this custom before.. nor has anyone in my state [bengal]

remember, there's not a better truth than hinduism.. but certain misconceptions have pointed towards hinduism n some hindus hav started to believe that hinduism isnt for real..

so i say stick to the basics of hinduism, n preach.. of course besides doing ur job, which u'll surely get!
