Yes, this is totally inappropriate. Even for somepne you know for a while, prying into another person's financial status is at the very least is nosy. It is really none of your business.

Oh please Kimmy, you must be a real novice to polite conversation over the age of 20. The one question you can almost guarantee to be asked is what do you do for a living, its a common ground since most of us work....its not any sort of attempt to establish your financial standing, hell you could be a volunteer at a charity or a CEO of a major company, you're still going to get asked the question as an Ice-breaker. If you can't handle it, don't go out.

Is suppose if they are asking you about how much $$ you make then yes, it is rude, and I'd say "pretty decent" and leave it at that, however if the questions are if you enjoy what you do, what is it like, etc, then those are just general questions which may be asked because they are genuinely interested.

I dun like people to check on me on this sort of things especially when we are meeting for the first time. To me, people asked this sort of question seems to be thinking of borrow money from you or either getting you to invest on something

I do think that will be pretty irritating.
Usually normal courtesy is to ask about the job, as an opening to more conversation. But if he/she starts to probe, one may wonder if there is a motive.

Asking what I do for living is not the same as asking how much I make. If it's someone you just met they are just asking questions to find out about who you are, not how much you make.

I suspect that no one is checking on your financial standing...they may be trying to drum up a conversation. Is that chip on your shoulder as big as it sounds? IF so, if I were you, I would be happy that anyone asked me anything.
what would you prefer they talk about? Sex? The big bang theory?

If it is a guy, don't be offended. The questions are merely a smoke screen to thow you off as he checks out your breasts, your behind, your legs, etc. etc. etc....

I don't like anyone asking a lot of personal questions. I consider it very rude.

I don't feel annoyed. I just feel sorry for their boorishness. A better way of asking is, How do you spend your time?
