For free, it's one of the best. But then, don't you generally "get what you pay for"?
I use Trend PC-cillin Internet Security 2006 (bought it after using the 2005 version and loved it). You can get a free trial at:
http://www.trendmicro.com/en/home/us/home.htm
They also have a free on line scan called "Housecall".
The listed price for Trend PC-cillin Internet Security 2006 is $49.95, but if you do a little shopping around, you can usually find it with a $25 rebate.
I don't think I'll ever use anything else. I was using a paid, up-to-date version on Norton and still managed to get nine viruses! But Trend even restricts me from potentially dangerous web sites!
But if you absolutely can't buy one, then AVG is about the best that I've used of the freebies.
As others have mentioned, you need extra protection from spyware/adware that AVG doesn't provide. The one on the Yahoo toolbar has been great... I only hope it remains that way now that it is from Norton. Spybot and Adaware are both good (free) programs.

I've been using the 'free' version of AVG for several years.
It is first class and the fact that it automatically updates itself every day is an excellent feature.
It has three times saved me from housing a virus on my machine and the way in which it deals with the 'infection' is brilliant in its simplicity.
I know many people who use AVG, and as you might gather from the comments on this page, they are all satisfied with its performance since it meets or exceeds all accepted criteria for a good anti-virus package.
So don't waste money on buying Norton etc., just download 'free' AVG!

I have run AVG for over a year now on one machine and tried Norton Internet Security on another and AVG wins hands down with every anti-viral feature required with daily updates and scanning. It's far less resource hungry But.......
You do need a good anti-spyware package (Spybot or adaware being the favourites) also a firewall is a good idea as the Windows one is c***. Try Zone Labs.
Also I have found that virus removal is far less involved than with Norton or Macafee. If you do decide to buy one Panda Titanium is really good and hell it even looks cuddley

We have had AVG free for about 4 years, we have always found it excellent. It does work and safe. We accidently deleted it a few years back, we installed Norton anti virus......not only did that let in a bad virus, but the virus ate the Norton Anti Virus programme. It cost us 40 euros too, we went straight back to AVG

Yes it is very good. A friend of mine had Norton's, she was having loads of problems with her computer. I told her to Junk Norton and download AVG Free edition. It immediately found 3 viruses Norton had failed to detect.

At least you are not paying for it. There are so many antiviruses that demands a purchase after that still we get virus infected.
I think AVG free and Avast are the two best antiviruses
