If you read the text of the speech, he did not insult Islam. He was speaking about the views of another person. His comment was that when any religion uses violence then the people on whom the violence is committed reject that religion even if it is otherwise holy. His speech actually was about three things. Reason and its role in religion was the overall topic. The second them was that the use of violence by anyone is an act against God in all circumstances. I think this is what really stirred up the Jihadists because the Pope basically said they were acting against God although he wasn't actually speaking about them. The speech was a threat not for the unfortunate quote but because he said George Bush and Osama bin Laden are both acting against God, without naming them in person. The third comment was that the Western world was abandoning reason and going with its lower instincts.

Oh I partly agree America is rather hypocritical for shouting loud about terrorism when in the early 1970's the US foreign office was funding the IRA and giving them arms BUT, alot of innocent people have been killed in the name of Islam, what the pope said was the truth, why should he be made to look the bad guy when he was repeating words from an ancient book of text? which however way you look at it has proven to be true....

The pope insults America daily. its just not made a big deal of, because the Americans aren't so unsure of their religions that they have to kill people to prove him wrong, which sadly, just proved that 700 year old quote factual.

Look up "Peter's Pence." Most of Peter's Pence comes from America. It's always about the money - the Muslims have not been sending in their fair share. ;-)
