okay.... police are human... it's like any other job out there... you have your assholes (I'm sure you work with some) and you have your great people (I'm sure there's some of those wherever you work too) So this stereotype of all police being scum is getting VERY old. I'm going into law enforcement. I am not fat.... I don't like jelly doughnuts, I don't have a superiority complex, I was never bullied as a child OR young adult, I was never "unpopular", I am not dumb, yada yada yada.. the reason I'm going into law enforcement is to help people. Now don't get me wrong 'cause I would LOVE to be in a high speed chase before the end of my career, but.. that's not really why I'm willing to risk getting shot on duty. I want to serve, protect, and make a difference in my community. I've interviewed some GREAT officers for my schooling and they're doing it for the same reason I want to. Oh yeah..... and anyone who has such negative things to say about law enforcement should consider this: If you don't break the law (i.e. don't speed, don't do drugs, don't drink and drive) you would never have to deal with an officer!

I think the police are doing a very valuable job protecting the rights of criminals, rapists, murderers and foreigners. If it wasn't for the police, we wouldn't be afraid to defend ourselves in a fair fight against someone of a different race of creed. In fact, if it wasn't for the police, we would live in a world where freedom of speech actually meant freedom of speech. You could drop litter on the ground! Imagine that! Horrible, just horrible.

Both. Sometimes at once, usually seperately. Most are simply doing their job. Some are overbearing dckheads, drunk on their own power. Not apologizing for em, but they do routinely deal with the truly worst elements of humanity. They often become jaded, seeing EVERYBODY as a "perp", rather than a fellow human being.

Some are good, but most (at least in the US) take advantage of their power and that show gun to harrass people. That is why they are taken by shock when a citizen strikes back filing a grievance. Most take for granted you don't even know it is your right to.

As I posted in another question, though, in my experience grievances are just for show too. Often Internal Affairs covers for them, the code of silence makes them cover for each other, denying they witnessed their buddy violating rules and civil rights. If citizens get to know their rights it "makes their jobs harder." And the town does not want to deal with civil lawsuits for violation of human rights. So they always go after who they perceive is most illiterate.
