You need not make a career out of it (Government service isn't what it used to be; the pension system is now integrated with social security, which sucks). But it's good training, and a number of my friends in other fields -- petroleum, insurance, politics, diplomacy -- started out in the FBI.

It's clearly not like the TV and movie image, which you're probably already aware. Since it's a national organization, expect that you will be subject to moving around and not necessarily in your home area or where you'd like to be, for a number of years until you gain seniority. Your wife and family should be willing to accept transfers and relocations. FBI agents have a very frustrating job in that at the federal level, there is so much red tape to get anything done, so much approval needed to do the simplest of tasks, that you should be a patient person and one who can deal with administrative barriers effectively.
If seriously considering such a career, best to call your local FBI office and ask how to speak to a recruiter or obtain more information on job qualifications. The FBI does recruit and is always interested in qualified applicants, the same all the other areas of law enforcement these days.

It is mainly routine police work on a federal level. Not exciting, certainly not like on Criminal Minds or some such.
It can mean displacement from your home state. It means long hours and a certain displacement of your loyalty to your family if you are going to be the best at it you can.
Salary not great for all the stress involved.
Status in the community usually quite good.
You have to really want it or don't bother. It is not a vanity job.

Cons: Not being able to ask people about the pros and cons of working for the FBI as a secret agent.
Something tells me that if you're willing to blab about contemplating joining the FBI... they might not have use for you.
Or maybe I am being facetious.

It's a good job, but you will never get rich! Most work out of specific areas where they have bureaus!

Seems to me like the $$ would be great but the pressures that would revolve in your personal life would be too much to take. I'm just guessing but I bet I'm right in some cases..........
