In other parts of the world it is seem as barbaric torture! there is no excuse, no good reason, it is NOT good for the cat and the only vet that would even consider this disgusting practice is the one who is completely unethical and doing it for the money! Cruel, Cruel, Cruel!

anastasia - point taken, but is it part of american "culture" to rip a cats claws out? I think not, its more to do with being a selfish pet owner who want the "cute fluffy pussy" but only on their terms.

Quote from cat breeder - READ AND LEARN :As a cat breeder....we extremely dissapprove of declawing. It is more than cruel, it is inhumane. Any educated person knows that this is a partialamputation. A tendonectomy requiresremoval of the ENTIRE first joint of the paw. This is akin to chopping of the tip of all our fingers and toes. Someone CAN heal from thistype of butchery but they will never be the same. De-clawing often changes the temperment of a cat and destroys good litterbox habits.JW is very, very wrong. I have seen cats who end up ebing sent to shelter because of this procedure. Most reputable vets will NOTdo this procedure. The only ones that do...including the one that Miss JW probably works for....do it only for monetary gain NOT for the animals welfare. Clipping a cat's nails is easy to do. Those who de-claw and justify it ..don't fully understand lasting consequence. ..... NEED I SAY MORE

Don't put me in that CATagory, I'm an american and I am 10000000% against declawing. People who get their cats declawed are too lazy to try and work with their cat to teach them to scratch other places like scratch posts. or find the other alternitives like softclaws. etc. they are selfish, and don't think about what they really are doing to their poor kitty, they don't understand the pain and torture that they have to go through possiably for a lifetime.

you guys continuously bring up this, and this is only an opinion and an observation on my part. we adopted our cats (they were already declawed) from a humane society after someone turned them over. they never had a problem or were in any pain from it, they were still happy cats running around playing all the time. all my friends that i can think of had cats that were declawed and none of them seemed to be in any pain as well. what's this thought that they are likely to experience a lifetime of pain?? also a lot of the cats are SOLELY indoor cats, never let outside. Do you think it's better to not declaw a cat, but instead let it be an outdoor animal with not much attention? I personally think cats over here are completely spoiled when it comes to the life of luxury living indoors. Anyway, that's my 2 cents, and this is only my opinion.
Why do you ask why we think it is a good idea if you are then just going to argue about why it is wrong? Over here vets don't do it for money, they do it b/c their customers ask for it. EVERYONE HAS AN OPINION. I'm sure it hurts the cat, but it isn't going to be stopped any time soon over here at least. And no, you are not going to be able to convince everyone that it shouldn't be done just because you are ranting and raving about how cruel it is. People purchase the animal ( and I don't think this way) and then conside it their 'property'. Meaning if they want it declawed, they'll have it declawed, they'll neuter/spay it if they want, have the tail docked off, crop the ears, remove the dewclaws. And I bet you are against all that as well. Some people just won't change their minds on this.

It's not just America where this barbaric practice is still allowed. In Australia when you take a kitten in to get deseded you can often find that they will offer a declawing too. Unless there's a severe medical reason that the cat needs this done I can't fathom why anyone would be so cruel to do that just because of the furniture or whatnot.

Let me tell you this: when I went to adopt my beautiful cat at the Humane society of Texas( a LONG time ago) they asked me if I was going to declaw him and I said yes, thinking declawing was clipping the nails when they grew. They told me EVERYTHING declawing meant, and how it hurts the cats physically and mentally. I would NEVER do that to a cat. Never ever. It's just wrong and inhumane!! I don't even know why this thought even goes through people's minds. They are taking away the cats only natural defense and that confuses them. If you really love cats, you would NEVER do that. The thought of it is absolutely pathetic.

i would never de-claw my cat, claws are essential from getting away from anything that may want to hurt them and scratching themselves. if anyone wants to stop them from attacking wildlife then a bell helps, 2 bells are even better as they can learn to not make them jingle. many people have there own reasons to de-claw a cat, like if they attack people, and some cats do.

Lots of cultures around the world eat them, too. Is that barbaric? I'm not in favor of declawing but let's get it into perspective

Well, I am an American with three cats, and I think declawing a cat is a pretty disgusting thing to do. I didn't know it was a US-exclusive practice...
(I think that spaying animals is pretty awful, too, but it makes more sense to me anyway. )

de-clawing a cat is horrible. It very painful for the cat, just think of it like thier ripping your arm out! See.. that's painful. I guess that's how de-clawing feels, or even worse.
