How can it help you, or what does it represent for you?

I have studied Buddhism for many years and have lived in Buddhist countries, and I don't understand this either. When some Buddhists pray, they say, "I take refuge in the Buddha, in the Dharma (the teachings), and the community of monks." But there isn't anything to do with getting a name.

I think you mean a Dharma name,
this is more of a tradition for monks (at least as I understand it) but the way it helps I suppose is that it seperates your pre-Buddhist life from your now Buddhist life.

If I was to have one I would totally take Amagarika, its "wandering pilgrim" in tibetan.
