My family does not have a lot of money to work with for groceries. Im looking for a meal that is cheap but yet very filling. Any suggestions?

Beef/Chicken Stew and reg bread or frech bread for dipping is very hearty and filling - not expensive to make either.

To make ends meet I use to make Chili Volcanoes (still do) - Make up your favourtie chili recipe and serve or a mound of mashed potatoes on your plate - kids like it and I named it my Chili Volcanoes - quite filling.

Thanksgiving is generally VERY filling. I think because of all the carbs/starches that people eat. :)

You could buy a large turkey and roast it, then have leftovers for a while. If you can buy a turkey on sale, that would be CHEAP and feed your family for a long time.

You can make any number of items with leftover turkey--turkey croquettes, turkey sandwiches, turkey tetrazzini. Really, any recipes that call for cooked chicken can be substituted with cooked turkey.

I like www.allrecipes.com because they have a good variety of recipes, and people rate them so you'll know if it's good before you go through the trouble and expense of making something, only to have it turn out as a flop!

Potatoes, eggs, corn or tuna (can food) are cheap and filling

Potato Salad
Boil a lot of potatoes & eggs, mix with mayo + salt + lemon juice + pepper

Chicken / Turkey Salad Sandwiches
Steamed Chicken breasts (shredded + salt) & apples or celery (sliced) + mayo + lemon juice, sandwich with any kind of bread

Bean sprout + onions + ox tail or any kind of bones + tomato + ginger soup ----> fry the onion slices till golden then boil with all the ingredents in a big pot of water for 2 hours up

Steamed rice + vegetables (carrots, onions, celery, ) + Tofu + eggs (for protein)

You can fix fried rice with the left over for the next day.

meat is the most expensive part of any meal ....try and stay with dishes where you can cut back on the meat and increase something more such as more veggies.....oatmeal in meatballs burgers ,meatloaf does a lot of streching and only use a little and it is unoticeable...sauces are always good money savers...hot dishes with pasta are good...good old heavy cream soups are filling

Us Latins use lots of rice and beans... they are healthy and very cheap... So usually we alternate the rice and beans and accompany it with a meat dish... Lasagna is very filling, I think pasta in general is also cheap as well...
