I took an interest in cryptic Xwords a couple of years ago, but because I didn't know anything about how the clues were formed, I couldn't make head nor tail of the solutions. So I bought a book "How to Solve Cryptic Crosswords" by Kevin Skinner. The ISBN number is 0-7160-2013-0 and costs about £3. Get this book.
The compiler of the cryptic Xword uses many types of clues and the secret is how to recognise these 'types' of clues.
For the last few years I cannot pass a cryptic Xword and attempt the one in the Sunday Times each week. You will get hooked.
