I don't get it! Is it cause I have a positive perception of myself, or cause the camera catches more angles than the mirror? Thats what my sister told me. Also I do realise that the mirror is an opposite view of yourself, so that must have something to do with it...help!

you have a positive perception. when you go to a mirror you are expecting to see yourself, so your brain is prepared. when a phot is taken you cant see yourself and are less prepared. same as when you just glance across and see yourself in a shop window reflection. i bet you are generally shocked and not so happy at what you see. having a positive perception isnt bad , its good. you are happy with who you are personality wise, who cares about your "looks". dont be hard on yourself. you are who you are and what are what, enjoy !!!!!

A lot depends on the lighting and the angle of the shot. It also depend on if the subject (in this case yourself) is uncomfortable at the time the picture is being taken.

I could reproduce all the things one needs to do for a good portrait but I think you would get most of the basic stuff frm the link below.

In summary
1. Camera angle. Avoid shooting from under the face. It highlights the nostrils (one f the earlier answers has this).
2. Shoot from some distance away. If you are too close to the subject, the nose looks bigger than it should.
3. Lighting - harsh lighting or shadows take away from the picture.
4. The head - Usually a 3/4 to 2/3 frontal is better than a "straight at the camera" shot. Sometimes a profile is better.
5. The sholders - you got to see what works fr the subject - square or slightly angled
6. Hands - most hands do not know what to do when a portraight is being taken. They have to be told what to do...
7. Body posture
8. Shiny skin reflecting the flash or lighting - we dont want that...

One, turn your picture on the camera - computer into mirror mode.. that helps, two..... its all to do with how you take the angled shot.. NEVER HAVE THE CAMERA LOOK DOWN ON YOUR NOSE.. it makes it larger for instance change the light and ambience keep on experimenting till you are happy ideally set it up on your computer so you can use it as a viewfinder than snap till you have worked the art of looking better than you really are... Good luck. One more thing its not the camera but the camera man that is the problem.

It's to do with facial assymmetry.
You are so used to seeing your face in a mirror that this is the way you like to see yourself. A photo shows you as everyone else sees you , and as you never see yourself.
Do you have a yahoo 360 page? They're free. Upload some pictures so that others can see, and help you realise you are pretty!

Some people are just photogenic and others are not. I dont usually take a good photo myself, but had a professional photographer take the photos and I dont look too bad (even if I do say so myself) And I musnt as my sister was jealous of the pictures so that says it all. So i wouldnt worry about the photos as it is most likely not a true indication of how you look.
