our dog is just 7 months old. we have a big garden in whick he spends most of the day in as we are at work. we have flowers both sides of the fences but he onlydigs a certain perimetre in the right hand side where he dug out all my flower bulbs and destroied all other flowers. I also had strawberries and he had chewed the stalkswhith nearly ready to eat strawberries. if this is normal behaviour for a bored dog, how can we train him not to do it anymore?

You can try sprinkling down about 1/2 inch thick line of cayeen pepper powder around the perimeter where he digs and wet it a little so the powder leaches into the ground. He will start to sniff and get turned off. Don't use too much around vegi's or fruit.

Also excersise the mind and body of the dog so he tired. Kongs stuffed with treats will keep the dog entertained and busy while he figures out how to get the treats out.

I once saw a program that did the following.

Get a water pistol, hide in the garden and everytime the dog starts diging, give him a squirt. Eventually he will notice the fact that when he digs he gets wet, it takes time but its worth it.

Is it possible to allocate a patch in the garden for the dog? He will learn thats where he can dig his bones and toys. Alternatively, I also saw people who gently threw little beanbags at the dogs when they did something naughty though I think as he is a puppy it would have to be very small. Its enought o make him jump without hurting him.

another idea is a distraction. Get a big empty plastic fizzy drink bottle and fill it with little dog biscuits then put the lid back on very tight. Pierce little holes in the bottle so pup can smell biscuits and it will keep him occupied for ages, especially good if you are going out and leaving pup at home.

Hope this helps.

your dog is bored. He needs exercise and diversion. You should walk him three times a day, morning noon and night and then he would be too tired to dig and cause damage. I had the same problem, the vet told me to give the dog more exercise. It really worked. Cut down on the chewing too. He is not being naughty and does not need punishment, he needs diversion from boredom.

You already have various answers on how to dissuade him from digging your flower beds up but please make sure he doesn't eat any of them. Some plants and bulbs are highly poisonous to people and pets. Find out if any of yours are and take out the dangerous ones at least until you've got him safely garden trained.

Giving him more exercise may help. If he's doing it through boredom, more walking and playing with him should reduce that significantly. He's still young though - he will need a lot of attention at the moment.

Also, when you catch him doing that, distract him. Call him over. Keep doing that. He'll eventually give up digging up your plants because he knows you'll just interrupt him.

its normal behaviour. but dog usually only do it when their bored, and need exercise. so u need to walk ur dog more. digging isnt a good stimualtor for ur dog, giv it sumthing to do, play ball with it or giv it a bone to chew on. if u dont hav time to walk ur dog alot then u can get a tread mil and teach it how to use it

If you can, I would build a little sand box just for your doggy. Train him/her by taking her to her special area of the yard for digging, when you witness him/her digging in the non-appropriate area... eventually he/she will learn that it is ok to dig in the sand box, but NOT in the garden... Good Luck, and Happy Tails

Maybe he is possessed by the spirit of Capability Brown & he objects to your planting arrangements?

OF COURSE ITS NORMAL MORE FOR SOME BREEDS THAN OTHERS
YOU MUST TAKE THE DOG INTO THE GARDEN WHEN IT DOES IT AND REBUKE IT THERE SO IT KNOWS WHAT ITS DONE IS NOT ACCEPTABLE
