In English when we make comments about something we often say "how" or "what" phrases like
What a cute baby!
or
How cute!

What kinds of things do German speakers say in these situations? (This is a grammar question more than a vocabulary question, but common vocabulary words are also welcome.)

Gladly, German and English are very similar (well gladly, if you want to learn the languages...)

Was fuer ein niedliches Baby! = What a cute baby! (was=what)

Wie niedlich! = How cute! (wie=how)

Very similar with questions:

How are you? = Wie geht es Dir/Ihnen?

When was that? = Wann war das? (when=wann)

Sometimes Germans might just say:

Das ist aber niedlich!... Is that cute!
An exclamation mark takes you quite far in written, colloquial German...

Hope it helps...

I'm an American currently living in Germany:

What a cute baby! Was für ein süßes Kind!

How cute! Wie süß!

Hope that helps.

it's actually not very different than in english!
"was für ein/eine..." = what a
"wie..." = how (wie süß! = how sweet!)

english is a language with germanic roots, so sometimes you can see the grammatic similarities.
