The current 2E carburator engine is not powerful and I would like to swap it with an EFI engine of probably 1800cc or more of a Toyota type. Will it require me to change the gearbox - and I would like to remain manual.

There are a few engine choices available and they will require a lot of work considering that your car is carburated. Below are a list of available engine options.

5efe - 1500cc from tercel, paseo
3ee - 1985-1990 tercel 1500cc efi engine
7afe - 1800cc corolla engine from 1992+
4age - 1600cc corolla engine from 1985-1990

Either way you will need to replace the transmission as the stock transmission will not be able to handle the extra HP and torque.

it can be coupled onto your existing gearbox, but the torque characteristics are far superior to infernal combustion that you can get rid of clutch and just use a few gears.

quiet, smell free, the electric car experience is far more enjoyable than fossil fuel burners.
