How to set default proxy for a system and to selected application?

Question

Iam using Proxy server address in my system for using internet& Iam using Mcafee9.0 in my system.During working of internet Mcafee tries to update but i fails!.I think it dono my proxy address & also it doesn't know is internet is connected or not,how can i set proxy address for every application or defaultly to my system.By setting this proxy to every application or defaultly to system then the system or any applicatons in my system knows iam using the internet.How can i use it please suggest!!!!!
