why is it that in the Ten Commandments, God finds it neccessary to say Thou shalt not lie, and then say 'thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neightbor? isn't that two sides of the same coin? And if man couldn't live by the Law, and Jesus had to come to complete it, wouldn't laying down a set of rules that is impossible to live by make God a sadist? Why not just send Jesus down and get it over with?

actually wonderful questions. The law was designed to SHOW US (cause we can be pretty stuborn) that we can not (on our own) save ourselves and "Work out our own salvation".

God in His wisdom and mercy gave us the ten commandments (only ten) to lay the ground work for the Messiah Jesus Christ.

In realizing that we fail time and time again at the simple 10 commandments we would better understand our great need for Jesus who was the once and for all final sacrifice for all our sins.

we are however still suppose to do our best, through the strenght of the Holy Spirit by way of our belief in Jesus Christ to live by the commandments. They just are not our way to salvation. Jesus is.

Thou shalt not lie is not in the 10 commandments.

Read the 10 commandments, they are not wearisome if you love God. The purpose of the Old Covenant is so people realise they cannot do it on their own they need a saviour.

The New Covenant is older then the old though, because all heavenly beings already live under it, and have for who knows how many millions of years.

It depends on the version, but its two ways of saying the same thing.

Actually this whole "law" thing is a misunderstanding. The Law that God gave, called Torah, are commandments that anyone is able to follow with no problems.

The "law" that Paul refers to was the laws, rules and reforms of the Pharisees of the day. Looking at Jesus' condemning of the Pharisees as a broad of vipers (Mat 24) - he isn't abolishing God's pure and holy Torah, but the corrupt laws and reforms of the Pharisees.

Christians have been taught wrong as to which "law" is being refered to, which is from a misunderstanding of what Paul was really teaching. He was teaching people to live under God's holy Torah and to forsake the laws and reforms of the Pharisees.

Obeying the Ten Commandants today is showing your obedience to GOD. Not stealing, killing and loving your neighbor are among the laws of building your relationship with GOD. Those that don't keep his commandants chose not to do and are foolish. Jesus came to save us from damnation (HELL) Which really exist. Jesus is coming back. Try reading the good book and ask GOD for an understanding.

kelleygaither2000,
I think that you need to settle your thoughts a little more before you ask questions like this.

I think that I can understand a part of it;
"And if man couldn't live by the Law, and Jesus had to come to complete it, wouldn't laying down a set of rules that is impossible to live by make God a sadist? Why not just send Jesus down and get it over with?"
Jesus fulfilled the law. And people must trust in God, through Jesus Chirst in order to be saved. Those that are telling people that they have to live by a set of rules are called 'Legalists" and pervert the Gospel by saying so.

reading these answers it sadens me to know my brethern are not studying their Bibles (not all of you)
I doubt that the reason is He is a sadest. I myself wish He'd come now.
The commandment not to lie would be impossible for man to keep or even figure out exactly as if you did not know that.
Not lieing about someone else in an attempt to disgrace that person is easy to understand and know when one is doing it...Still today if a person does what the new testiment calls whispering, we call gossiping is still a reason the practicer will not be allowed in heaven

the part of the law that was fulfilled was that passover and other sacrificial laws and ceremonial practices. Right and wrong behavior as far as I can tell remains the same
I think you know that as well.
If God expected us to improve He would no doubt just extinuish all mens life so His aim is probably not that.
Perhaps we are His entertainment. He does have a great sense of humor

Why did God give us commandments that we humans can't follow?
It's common knowledge that, yes, it's IMPOSSIBLE to follow all the ten commandments, which brings us back to our original question: God gave us the commandments to show that every person has sin. If God didn't give us the commandments, we wouldn't know what sin was. God is righteous, holy and perfect, all of which we weren't ... until Jesus Christ that is. He came and washed away all our sins, so we are no longer under the law, but under grace.
The bible says "Love the lord your God with all your heart, mind, soul and body" and "Love your neighbor as yourself" and if you follow these commandments, you fufill all the law (If you love your neighbor, you would do no harm to them- do not lie, steal, etc...).

Hope that helps. =) God bless

thou shall not lie = thou shall not bear false witness against thy neighbor. same meaning.
God's rule is simple: LOve God, and love ur neighbor. But it is doing so that makes it complicated.. bec we are only human. it takes a lot of thinking and efforts to be able to follow those simple commandments.

One can lie that has nothing to do with "bearing false witness aganst a person"

I can lie about my age or weight or money I could have stolen.
Yet it's not lying or being a false witness against another.
The law was 613 ordinances under Mosiac Law that one one could possibly follow. Plus the original ten commandments that still no one can obey all the time. Thus the Law condemns us to die (hell) but the Son of God paid our sin debt on the cross which brought us under GOD'S GRACE-LOVE! We still aren't perfect yet if we BELIEVE the GOSPEL we can be saved and avoid condemnation.

Jesus gave us two new commandments to merge all together
Luke 10:27
'You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,' and 'your neighbor as yourself.'"

and
In Matt. 22:37, 39, Christ quoted from Deut. 6:5 and Lev. 19:18. (Deut 6:5 5 And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. Lev. 19:18 … but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself:

Jesus will come back and end it all!
Revelation
22:20 He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.

22:21 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.
