When A person asks for a donation doesnt that mean its tax deductable? And when they wont give you a book for anything under a $20 donation, isnt that selling the book? I am no lawyer but I am sure I am on to something here. And isnt the law supposedly be putting a stop to this type of behaviour If i am right.
I hope you understand what I mean in this question.

EXAMPLE. Some websites 'sell' books for a MINIMUM donation of $20.
Doesnt that mean I can start up my own book shop and do the same?

Nope, it's a common practice also used by PBS and other organizations.

It is not (apparently) illegal but it is arguably unethical. A "gift" is freely given, it is not an exchange of things of value.

I'm not familiar with any relevant court cases, but I'm sure some court somewhere has ruled on the matter.

The only thing that is unlawful is getting caught and convicted. Legally speaking, you can do whatever you want so long as you are not convicted for doing it. Whatever "it" is.

IRS (tax avoidance, generally) scams are the most common scams of all.

BTW, you must apply for and receive tax exemption status from the IRS before you can claim charitable donation status.

What book are you giving in exchange for a donation, CJunk? Do you need money? Obviously this question refers to your own behavior.
Why do you say "...when Christians ask..." Is it only Christians who ask for a donation?? Why do you want the legal rulings on Christians when your own website and info describes you as an atheist and freethinker?? Again, what are you trying to give away for money? Getting a real job would be easier.

A donation is any money you pay a foundation or other institution to cover the minimum cost of the manufacture of the item that they want to sell you. In some states it is tax deductible and they are supposed to give you a receipt for tax purposes.
Just like donataing clothes to Good Will. or giving donation to the church to cover the costs of the materials that they need to use and replace such as the candles to pray for your loved ones that have died that is not tax dedutable.

It costs anywhere between 7-14 dollars to ship a book, then depending on the size of the book, the print costs anywhere between 20 cents upwards.

When i ask for donations for books, i ask for a few dollars, even though that half of what the price on the back of them says.

You could actually ASK for the book without a donation. I'm sure they'd give it to you if you really wanted it.

Schools often do the same thing -- a high school fundraiser asks for a $5 "donation" to wash your car. So do many other non-profits.
