why do people think just because i am sicilian my family is in the maffia?

Because people are ignorant. The unfortunate fact is that all stereotypes had an origin in some truth. Sicily has been a hotbed of mafia activity in the past and continues to be one. However, that is no reason to assume all Sicilians are mafiosi. It's the same problem of small-mindedness and bigotry people of all ethnicities face. You should research the culture and then present people with more positive views.

Because Italians are not represented in the media accurately--when Italians are represented, it's in movies like the Godfather, Goodfellas, Casino, etc., and in television shows like the Sopranos. On the news, they focus on the mafia trials and incidents, ignoring the Italian American population at large.
