My husband and I are looking for a church to go to yet it seems everyone we visit, the pastor preaches about how evil all the other churches are and makes fun of and talks trash about them. They dont' have sermons on scriptures or Christ or anything... it's just bash bash bash. Some of my friends go to the churches he bash and they are all good people. How can these pastors and other "Christians" call themselves Christian when all they do is bash others?

A lot of people get offended when the truth is spoken. Truth does not equal bashing. Most Christian churchs tell the truth about Jesus being the only way, the truth about God giving his Son to die for humankind, and the truth that unbelievers will be offended by the TRUTH.....

It's high school all over again. This group says that group is stupid and anyone who belongs to it are fat, lazy slobs.

Ok, I could rant and rave about how sick I am of one group (religious or otherwise) bashing another for hours on end, but I think you'd appreciate something a bit more constructive.
See, there's this thing that psychologists call "group polarization". It's this sociological phenominon where if you put a group of people with a mutual belief in a big room together for an extended period of time, their belief is strengthened. And all too often it reaches the point where individuals from such groups feel chauvanism for their beliefs. They start to think that every other belief on the matter is absurdly wrong. (This process also works in reverse if you group together a bunch of people with differing views.)
This is, for the most part, why I dislike organized religion.

Well, if it's a midwestern Baptist Church, or anywhere in the Midwest, then it's all about being "holier than thou". I'm in Oklahoma so I see this all the time.

But, consider this: By their works you shall know them.

Pick a church based on what they do for the community. If the Church has no outreach, they can't be practicing what they are preaching, or what they are preaching isn't worth practicing.

Not all churches are like that. You can afford to be picky with your church just like you would for your Dentist. God will understand.

Legalism is the reason why the Pharisees recieved so much rebuke from Jesus. Trying to go to heaven through works and "acts of holiness."

If Christians are criticizing others, they're just being total hypocrites and they've truly misunderstood the message of the Gospel.

I suggest reading "What's so Amazing about Grace?" by Philip Yancey. He tries to tackle the same/similar issue in his book.

join one that does not. The reason it goes on is because a long time ago preachers started not telling their flocks that the preacher as well as the congregation is accountable for their actions. Long story short we have preachers who have their own personal agendas read the Epistles to Tim and Mat. 18, then find a place where everybody knows those scriptures and practices them, they will not be bashingcuz if they do they will have to apologize or be excommunicated

Certain churches feel that it is their 'right and god given duty' to bash other churches. This is done out of complete ignorance of the message of Jesus and His gospel.

One time the disciples came to Jesus and said that they had found 'others' casting out demons and the disciples were quite happy to report to Jesus that they ran the 'others' off.

Jesus rebuked them and said that there were sheep not of this flock and that if they were doing good then they should be left alone to do good.

May I suggest that you pray and await God's leading? He will direct you to the perfect place for you. Trust Him.
