Older syle lights use between 50 and 150 watts per lens, Say 100watts and there is at least one lit at any time which equals about 24x100 2.4kw per day per set of three lenses, multiply that by up to 16? times for a cross road and you're consuming about 40kw per 24 hours or appx £3.60 at household rates!

Lights are gradually being converted to LED heads which will use about a sixth of that energy, and last many times longer.

Something to be said for many European countries which use suspended lights hanging in the centre of the junction, can be seen from all sides and only one required, plus pedestrian signals if reqd.

Assume that a traffic light uses 100-watt bulbs today. The light is on 24 hours a day, so it uses 2.4 kilowatt-hours per day.
