What is the Tradition of Unity Sand at Weddings? I like the idea and I was wondering if it meant anything. What is the easiest way to incorporate this in the ceremony?

The sand ceremony is ideally used when you are blending families. Say, for example, that you have a child that isn't your fiance's, and he has a child that isn't yours.

On the table where the candle would go would be five containers. One would be larger and in the middle. The other four would be small containers filled with different colored sand. At the time when you'd normally light the candle, all four of you would go up and grab your container to pour them all together into the vase.

You could do the sand ceremony if it were just you and your fiance. Still have different colored sand, and just pour them together.

Traditionally, the unity candle symbolizes how your soul and your fiance's soul are joining to make one soul. The taper candles are extinguished to show that you now share one soul, one life. There are many ways to modify the unity candle ceremony to exhibit more independence, and the sand ceremony is just an alternative.

we had a beach wedding so candles were out(due to the wind)
we used unity sand, pouring the two different colored sand into one vial so the sand was layered and intermixed. our officiant said some words about how just like the sand we were now intermingled and could not be separated. we have the sand on our mantelpiece

We used a unity candle..but I think sand is used the same way..your mom and his mom have 2 different color sands in a glass container. they offer the sand to you and your husband. You both pour your sand together into one container. It symbolizes you both coming together as one. Hope this helps. good luck!
